What should the 'Idol' wannabes sing tonight?

Tonight’s American Idol theme is ”Songs of the 21st Century,” and coming off last week’s stellar episode, I’ve got my fingers crossed for a second consecutive week of great performances. Of course, that’ll largely depend on the contestants’ song choices, and while you can bet the 10 remaining finalists have already reheased the heck out of their numbers, that shouldn’t stop us from making last-minute suggestions for alternate selections, right? With that in mind, here’s my proposed song list for tonight’s show; feel free to tell me how lame tone deaf brilliant I am, or better yet, post your own. Bucky Covington, are you listening?

Chris Daughtry: Britney Spears’ ”Toxic” (Seriously! Just close your eyes and imagine him rockin’ it out.)
Paris Bennett: Faith Evans’ ”You Gets No Love”
Kellie Pickler: Ashlee Simpson’s ”Pieces of Me”
Ace Young: Toni Braxton’s ”You’re Makin’ Me High”
Taylor Hicks: Lenny Kravitz’s ”Lady”
Katharine McPhee: Robbie Williams’ ”Angels”
Lisa Tucker: No Doubt’s ”Ex-Girlfriend” (She keeps saying she’s a rocker, yo!)
Elliott Yamin: Mary J. Blige’s ”No More Drama”
Bucky Covington: The Killers’ ”Somebody Told Me”
Mandisa: Coldplay’s ”The Scientist”

Ace singing that highly sexual toni braxton song may make me gag to death.
I’m sure Chris would enjoy turning Toxic into bland Nickleback rock! He is what is wrong with rock music.

Wait. THinking about this more. If its songs from the 21st Century, then Ace couldn’t sing “You’re making me High” because it totally came out in 1996. That Faith Evans song was from 99 too.

Some of the songs you listed aren’t even from the 21st century. This is what I would like to hear them sing:
    Chris- Matchbox Twenty’s “Disease”
    Mandisa- Beyonce’s “Dangerously In Love”
Ace- Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River”
    Paris- Pink’s “There You Go”
    Bucky- Montgomery Gentry’s “Gone”
    Katharine- Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love”
    Elliot- John Legend’s “Ordinary People”
    Lisa- JoJo’s “Leave (Get Out)”
    Taylor- Gavin Degraw’s ” I DOn’t Want To Be”
    Kellie- Sara Evan’s “Cheatin'”

The Faith Evans song is 2001.

i just laughed out loud to GOB’s suggestion that Bucky do an instrumental song…i concur! (he’ll most likely do a 21st century country song though)

You’ve already been called out for listing songs from the last century, Michael. Let’s see: How about Paris singing Mariah’s We Belong Together. Ace could handle any song from Justin Timberlake. Mandisa should sing Mary J Blige’s Family Affair. ANd Chris could rock out on Jet’s Are you gonna be my girl. Katherine should take Destiny Child’s Independent Women.

Chris: Breathe: Greenwheel (they released the song first and then Melissa Ethridge). Or Seeing Red-Unwritten Law.
    Mandisa: Paranoid- Garbage
    Kellie: Goodbye Earl- Dixie Chicks
    Paris: That Thing- Lauryn Hill
Taylor: Hold my hand- Hootie and the Blowfish
    Katherine: They- Jem
    Elliot: Ordinary People- John Legend
    Ace: Are You in?- Incubus
    Bucky: The Dance- Garth Brooks

  • susanb

Taylorhas *got* to sing something by Ray LaMontagne, like “Trouble.” Katherine should go for “32 Flavors” (and then some!), good call on Paris, anything by Lauryn Hill.

  • gotaylor

    Chris: Bright Lights (Matchbox Twenty)
Ace: You’ll Think of Me ( Keith Urban)
Bucky: How Do You Like Me Now (Toby Keith)or Drops of Jupiter (Train)
Katherine: Don’t Know Why (Norah Jones)
    Kellie: Travelin’ Soldier (Dixie Chicks)
Still thinking for Taylor…everything I like for him is old….

  • Allison

I love the Bucky and the instrumental song comment! That’s great! However, I highly doubt that Pickler knows who Bjork even is!

  • Stephanie

I can think of a better song for Taylor: Johnny Lang- Lie to me.
Lisa could be complicated. If it can be reworked, So help me girl by Gary Barlowe. Just change the girl to boy. Actually that would be a great song for Ace or Elliot.
