Paula Abdul: What's up with her?

94211__paula_lUnder the category of ”And you’re just noticing this now?”, New York’s Daily News has a story discussing the loopy on-air behavior exhibited this season by American Idol judge Paula Abdul — and the fact that fans have been discussing her ”Glaaaadiator!” moments on message boards all over the Internet. Now I’m not sure Paula’s behaving much differently than she has for Idol’s previous four seasons, but I’ll say this:

I’m not especially bothered by her hyper-positive non-critiques (read between the lines, and you can figure out which performances she actually enjoyed). What irks me is how the ”Straight Up” singer consistently, rudely interrupts the program’s only coherent panelist, Simon Cowell. Hey, rude lady, let the British dude have his say!

Or else, as I’ve suggested before, swap Paula and Randy’s seats, so she won’t be able to get all up in Simon’s space. Any other suggestions for improving the Idol judging process — short of a tranquilizer gun?

I completely agree. Paula has been on my nerves for the last few seasons and especially this one. Every time Simon gives his opinion and Paula doesn’t like it, she rudely interrupts him and acts confrontational. It is annoying, unprofessional, and downright rude!! PLEASE replace her with somebody who has their head screwed on right and can give an honest critique.

I have to say that on Wednesday, when Kevin and Bucky were the final two, Paula gave the most lucid and meaningful speech she has ever made on Idol. But, other than that, she is incredibly annoying whenever Simon speaks. So, yes, please move her.

  • Maya

Agreed! Switch Paula and Randy. That way, Paula can’t just repeat what Randy said, *and* she can’t interrupt Simon. The only time she was vaguely coherent was when she went first at some point this finals season. I do enjoy her seal clapping though — it’s like she just painted her nails and wants to keep them from touching anything. Or she learned how to clap at Sea World. I missed the melon-moth-cornflake episode — is it somewhere online? I think she’s utterly useless as an actual judge but great as a morale-booster, which, when you’re Bucky, is nice to have around.

Well no, now that you’ve taken the tranquilizer gun option off the table…

I want to punch her in the face when she interupts Simon. She is so obnoxious it drives me nuts. I have never understoofd why she is a judge on a “singing” competition – she was never that good of a singer…”rush. rush” anyone?

  • lucilia

Paula has been loopy since day 1. Actually I’d say this season she’s been the “most” normal so far. Anyone who has ever watched the show knows to just ignore Paula’s comments.

I think Paula and Randy should switch seats. Heaven forbid the woman has to formulate an opinion of her own.

  • stephanie

Paula was never a good singer. She was too nasaly for my taste. She is just there to comfort the kids. Simon and Randy know what they are talking about, but does Simon sing? I don’t think so.

  • Brad

I think it’s time for Paula to go and be replaced with Janice Dickinson !! She is, and always will be, the ultimate reality tv judge.

  • Elizabeth

My opinion is that the producers push her to act that way so everyone keeps talking about it.

I’ve said it before; Paula should be replaced by Debbie Gibson. She like Paula is a very POSITIVE person, but unlike Paula, despite the fact that her music was just as lame as the Straight Up Girl, at least Debbie could sing. It’ll never happen, though; Fox won’t mess with the chemistry.

Paula does seem more loopy this year. She must’ve borrowed some of that “bliss” from Daniel Franco of Project Runway.

  • H

I think Randy and Paula should switch seats with two random audience members, who would likely have more coherent and relevant things to say.

  • Brian

Paula and Randy, but mostly Paula, are jsut annoying and have no reat insight. Randy thinks if he punctuates his sentences with “Dawg” that he is really saying something. I think in many ways he is just the “token black guy” which does both him and the audience a disservice. And Paula seems to make the whole goal of her presence to slop sugar on the contestants and send daggers at Simon. At least with Simon there is actual criticism, when you are good you are good, when you are bad you are bad, when you are mediocre you are mediocre and he doesn’t mince words he just lays it out there. My idea is get rid of randy and paula and have rotating guest judges every week.

Instead of Janice Dickenson, let’s bring back FAYE DUNAWAY- so she can say again– “DON’T CALL US, WE’LL CALL YOU!”

  • Jeannie

Did anyone take a close look at her eyes? That girl has been ingesting something!

  • roel

just cancel the whole damned show altogether! get rid of them all in one fell swoop!

  • Tiffany

I know it’s unlikely that he’d ever agree to do it, but I’d love to see Barry Manilow replace Paula or Randy as a judge. I’ve never been the biggest Barry Manilow fan, but her really impressed me when he coached the contestants this week. He gave all the potential Idols such great advice– very honest & constructive (and the man really seems to know what he’s talking about). It’d be a nice change from Paula’s incoherent blathering and Randy’s “aiirite…Dawg” nonsense.

  • lei

“Straight Up” is how Paula orders her drinks. This year its too obvious, takes away from the show, and even this year’s contestants look impatient with her as she slurs incoherently.
They should put her on a ‘medical leave of absence” and find someone sober.

  • brandonk

I agree with switching Paula and Randy’s seats. Having Simon go first would be nice too, except that he’s the climax, and having to listen to Randy and Paula after Simon would make them sound even stupider.

  • meg

When Paula is so obviously hopped up on something, liquid or otherwise, she’s drooling into her own over exposed cleavage, its time for an intervention.

  • Matt

Paula has GOT TO GO!! She is almost getting too much to watch AI at all anymore. Can’t stand her incoherant ravings and interrupting Simon (the only guy there who knows what he is doing) I was REALLY hoping that Abdul would be fired after the “Cory-gate” incident – but no such luck. When are the producers of “AI” going to realize she has GOT TO GO!!!!

  • brent

I could not agree more. Even though Randy’s verbal tics and statements are painful to watch, he at least comments on the actual SINGING. Paula is left to either copy what Randy says or to blather on about how “wonderful they look” or to let them know that they are a “precious little gift.” Who needs this crap? These people aren’t here for a self-esteem boost, they want to get better!
And I CANNOT watch her when an “attractive male” is singing. You can actually see her ovaries start to enflame. We all know you’ve had a string of loveless marriages Paula(Emilio, that one gay guy…) but please try to keep your hormones out of the criticism process.

  • lauren

paula is fine. people should get off her back. so she’s loopy, so what?
she should stop interupting tho, that is just rude.

  • Dylan

I think ‘Roel’ has made the only inteelligent suggestion which was to just cancel the whole stupid show. It boggles my mind how some people find entertainment value from such garbage. This is television’s lowest point and will only sink lower until reality tv goes away.

  • Nancy

I want to start an online petition to get Fox to take Paula off the air. However, being Canadian, Fox isn’t going to listen to my opinion, so I’m hoping some brilliant American with great taste will do it. I don’t know if Paula is on drugs or booze or what, but she never gives Simon a chance to say anything. Her critiques don’t make any sense (“You are needed in this competition”–what the hell is that supposed to mean?)
Her crap about Taylor’s dancing was just a case in point. Simon is right, it is a singing competition and not a dancing competition. Who cares about his dance moves? How is he going to sound on the radio? Maybe the best thing to do would be to bring in the guest judges again. Paula seemed more well-mannered when they were on. Plus we’d get fresh perspectives instead of “Yeah! You did your thing!” and “You look amazing.”

  • cj

please get her of the show.SHE IS USELESS

Paula is okay but she seems to say the same things over and over. It is kind of annoying when she interrupts Simon. I wish she would stop showing so much cleavage because my 8-year-old son does watch the show too. After all, it is a family show!!

My problem with Paula started when she favored ACE this season, I mean is she deaf???????? Has anybody noticed how Simon tells at least three different people they are the best in the competition?????? I don´t think any of these judges make cohesive statements and that is why i don´t understand anybody voting based on their critique. Randy calls the girls “DUDE” for Pete´s sake!!! The solution would be to lose the judges, I think American people are smart enough to decide who can sing and who can´t without the need of those three ranting about how pathetic or not the kids are. We are talking about a public that made Britney Spears a big star selling more than 12 million albums of her first album and she CAN NOT sing to save her life.
Anyway, good luck and thanks for the article!!!!
