Inscribe Edie Falco's Emmy trophy now

13948__carmella_lCarmela Soprano made a bold prediction on last night’s episode of The Sopranos: ”You are not going to hell,” she told her comatose husband, as she poured out her conflicting and raw emotions to the man whose history and fate were entwined with hers. (It was as if, in daring to hope for Tony’s redemption, she might also be redeemed herself for being an accessory to and beneficiary of his crimes.)

Like Carmela, we want to be bold, too, so PopWatch will make this prediction now: Edie Falco won the Best Actress in a TV Drama Series Emmy last night. Sure, the awards won’t be given for another six months, but it’s nearly impossible to imagine that another actress will top Falco’s emotional yet unsentimental performance on last night’s show. Watching Carmela turning on a dime from pride to disappointment and anger with son A.J., or defending her parenting style against Ro’s criticism, or offering alternately tender and steely encouragement to Tony to fight for his life (and their lives together) — you simply had to marvel at Falco’s range and power.

She should start writing her acceptance speech now. Everyone else can just fuhgeddaboutit.

I will probably be shot for saying this, but Falco’s superb performance makes me sad. Not because she isn’t awesome, but because Jennifer Garner won’t have a shot at the award. I was really hoping, that in her last season, Ms. Garner would somehow pull out a performance that would win her an Emmy– making up for her past snubs (most specifically seasons one and two).

As I was watching the Sopranos last night,I was thinking the very same thing about Edie Falco winning another Emmy with that performance. It was brilliant. She made you feel everything that she was feeling, going through the wide range of emotions that Gary wrote about. If she doesn’t win the Emmy, it will be a real shame.

She WILL win that Emmy and deservedly so! We love ya Edie!! BRILLIANT SHOW!!

  • ME

of course, she will win the emmy because she got all ugly! Acting without makeup? A brave move on her part and virtually guaranteeing all sorts of awards.

Agreed! She was breathtaking. While watching it, I had one of those rare moments of complete amazement, knowing I was seeing something really special. She will win, the show should win, David Chase should win a writing award. Gandolfini was pretty good, too, but Edie Falco was raw and riveting.

i said exactly that when the episode ended. she could have won the oscar for that performance…it certainly was better than any of the five nominated this year.

Yes, that should seal the deal if she submits that episode.

I agree 100% re Edie Falco. She’s been so brilliant and she knocked it out of the park with this one. To Jason re Jennifer Garner: I also used to feel sad when she lost Emmys but not any more. I was surprised she was even nominated this year. For the past two years, she doesn’t even seem like the same actress. I actually feel frustrated watching her because I’m always expecting more from her — it’s painful to not even recognize Sydney in her any more. Actually I’ve give up watching Alias unless Vartan is in the show. She seems to have lost all interest in the character and the show let alone dramatic power.

I couldn’t disagree with your comments more in regards to Garner. I agree that her performance in season 4 was lacking, but she didn’t have as much weighty stuff to do, but season 5 has resurrected the show and Garner’s performance.
I’m hoping you are not just a Vartan fanboy and can realize that his absense on the show has given new lifeblood to the series, and (especially with the last episode that aired) has made me believe in the Syd/Vaughn romance again. Something I didn’t believe in in season 5.
Garner has given a few stellar performances this season already (the premiere and the last episode that aired) that I think would be strong submissions (especially the last episode). If “Alias” comes on strong with the end of its run (and I have no doubt that it will), I think Garner might play a huge factor in this race even though she’s not a lock for a nomination. She’s got the birth episode and the finale tapes to come, but like I said, she already has 2 great tapes to submit.

I was overwhelmed by Edie Falco’s performance. In the beginning, I was watching the dream/coma sequence, kind of confused and trying to figure it out, and then suddenly jarred into the hospital room, and the look on Carmela’s face was so disturbingly real I felt I was there. She seemed so genuinely terrified of losing her husband and it was beyond relatable, which brought the episode to such a level of intensity. She was amazing. I have never seen a performance that moving.

Edie Falco was amazing on last night’s episode of the Soprano’s. She will no doubt win the Emmy and she deserves the award. I have never seen an actress act with such intensity and so real. Honestly, they should already start engraving her name into the gold statue!

Not only was Falco’s performance last night Emmy worthy, I didn’t see a better performance last year at the movies by any Actor or Actress. She is a true original and a true talent.

I am going with Falco on this one, but let’s not forget that May sweeps is coming up, along with it all those special end of the season episodes… anyone care to guess which show will give us that kick booty story line that will give Ms. Falco a run for her money. I can’t off the top of my head, but one person who should be on the list, is Jennifer Beals, her work in showtimes the L-Word this season… has been extra, extra ordinairy.

  • Todd

Wow, I feel like I’m watching a different show. Falco’s performance didn’t faze me one iota. I didn’t get choked up, I wasn’t even moved. Neither she nor anyone else on The Sopranos deserves that kind of affection, because they’re all dirty characters, and all of them are complicit of the crimes committed.

  • Tammie

Gosh, Todd, I’m confused. Are you saying that nobody on that show deserves recognition because of the type of characters they play? Only actors playing “good” characters deserve accolades for superior work?
