Who'll get whacked first on 'The Sopranos'?

Categories: The Sopranos

162045__unclejr_lLa la la la la. I’m putting my fingers in my ears and squinting at the computer because I don’t want to know any Sopranos spoilers, but they’re hard to avoid when almost every TV critic in the universe has leaked word that someone gets whacked in the very first episode of Season 6 on Sunday night (EW’s Gillian Flynn reviews the series here, relatively spoiler-free).

Okay, I’m not above checking out the odds at gambling sites like Pinnacle Sports, which announced Wednesday in a press release that Uncle Junior (Dominic Chianese, pictured) is an 11/2 favorite to be the first casualty, followed by Christopher (Michael Imperioli) at 6/1. And I’m not above speculating — in order to really shock us, the whackee would have to be some innocent civilian, like restauranteur Artie Bucco (John Ventimiglia).

So I’ll open the floor: Who do you think will be the first to sleep with the fishes? Better yet, which character do you find annoying enough that you’d like to see them get whacked?

My money is Paulie Walnuts. That guys has had it coming for a while. I’m willing to bet however, that it won’t be one of the major characters. Probably someone like Vito.

Oh lord, please have them kill off annoying sister Janice in some painfully ironic way. Here are my immediate possible humiliating deaths: Heart attack on the toilet (they did it before), death by choking on a pot brownie, buried alive by her dead ex boyfriends, or run off a cliff from the entire cast.
My money is that they’ll kill off her husband instead, to then give the great drama of an annoying stepmom raising two orphan kids. OHHHHH, that sounds even better…

  • Valerie

I’d like to see Charmaine get it. Maybe Artie could beat her to death with a soup ladle……

  • Emily

I would love it to be Janice (as evil as that makes me sound). She’s manipulative and fake. There is nothing good about her-she’s just like Olivia, and she loves it. But it won’t be her. Junior is too big. Tony–no way. It can’t be Johnny Sack because he is in prison. Odds are increasing on Paulie, but I’m feeling Patsy Parisi for some reason. He still blames Tony for his bother’s death (and rightfully so).

  • scottb

    Silvio Dante’s first.

  • Seth

    Remember Furio?
It would be great if someone rounded him up and let Tony just go to work on him. Maybe keep his ponytail for good luck. But realistically it should be Junior.

  • Davey

Not Paulie, not Chris, not Tony.
Maybe Janice. I would LOVE that. Just as long as she doesn’t haunt people Six Feet Under style….

  • nathan

If it’s a major character, then it probably is Uncle Junior. If not, I haven’t a clue.

  • nathan

I just hope it isn’t Silvio or Paulie. If they die, it should be close to the end, and possibly one should be done in by the other.

  • quark

it’s gotta be dr. melfi. she’s in the poster as a reflection. they did that before with big pussy.

  • Ceballos

quark, you may be on to something. Not necessarily because of the reflection thing, (although that IS interesting and could be a clue)
I hadn’t even thought about her as a possibility mostly because I just don’t think about her that much (despite the fact that’s she’s third billed on a cast with at least 15 regular characters at different times).
If you remember back to the premiere of the show, a lot of people dismissed it as a ripoff of “Analyze this” (how silly does that sound now) and the Tony/Melfi relationship was integral (the reason Tony went to see her was because he was having the panic attacks.)
Now, although he still has issues (hey, who doesn’t?) I feel, and i’ve felt for a while that the way Melfi has been written into the show and its plotlines (which isn’t as much as Seasons 1-2) has been a bit forced.
It works out perfectly…she’s a main character in the Sopranos universe AND she’s relatively expendable.

  • Ceballos

When i say “it works out perfectly” i meant, as far as delivering the shock that the episode is promising

  • Sean

Please for the love of god make it Janice.

  • matt

it has to be paulie. he has been heading that way, and that would be a shock.

  • kim

I bet that it is Adrianna-we never actually saw her execution take place (it was off screen) and that would be a good way to advertise a whacking without sacrificing a main character (while still saying that it is a main character!)

  • Kelli

It should be Christopher after he let them whack his woman… she was one of my faves on the show.

  • Jen

Although there are a few I would like to see get bumped off, I think Artie will be the one. I guess we will all just have to wait and see….

  • Jay

Definitely not Paulie (SPOILER!!–I’ve read episode caps for future episodes and he is part of the plot). You want a real shock for who gets shot? Tony. Not saying that he’ll die, but I think he gets shot by someone close. Also, (SPOILER!!) I heard there is a suicide in this episode as well. So, maybe no one is actually “whacked” but something wicked happens in northern NJ Sunday night. I can’t wait.

  • Jen

Suicide? mmmmm…lets hope it is Artie then, he caused a storm of problems for himself and others last season.

  • Hank

Melfi – Done(makes sense RE:Reflection in the Season 6 poster)Her sister is rumored to be in the cast this year…Tony runs into Melfis sister at the funeral – sees similarities in her, confides in her and between that and FBI uncovering Melfis files ultimately leads to Tonys demise?! Sounds right to me.

  • larry G

AJ will get his first taste of blood, by whacking the Bear

  • Megan

I know it won’t happen, but I’m hoping it’s Meadow. She’s gotten on my last nerve since episode one!

  • Brian

Not Junior, not Melfi, not Janice, not Meadow, not Paulie, not Silvio, not Christopher. If its suiced I bet on Artie. If its a whacking I bet on Hesh.

  • Peggy

Interesting theory about Lorraine Bracco’s refelection in the press photos. David Chase has said in the past, that clues are in those pics. Yes, her sister does join the show as the wife of the “gay’mobster (the one that was on Celebrity Fit Club). Some reviews point out that genetics & DNA play a large part in this season’s plot. (Tony isn’t Meadow’s father?, Tony’s late father wasn’t his biological father?) Who knows, except that Janice & Bobby’s new daughter also figures into the plot. I’m in agreement that somehow Adrianna is in the first episode.(That would be shocking). (We didn’t SEE her die). I just hope they don’t use the dream gimmick. I think episode #2 has Tony & the gang heading out to LA for a business deal, while very mindful of this Sunday’s death. In a futue episode, Silvio has problems with his “added responsibilities”, (Paulie’s old job?). I’m gonna guess that Christopher has turned informant. Wouldn’t he be on the airport’s security cameras leaving Adrianna’s car in “long term parking”. Maybe the FBI got the tape, and he cut a deal. Either way, I can’t wait for Sunday’s episode!

  • Dirk Diggler

I hope they kill AJ – that guy is the worst actor since Stallone.

  • mic

If there is a God someone will put Janice out of her misery. But then again evil lives forever!

  • johnathan

No way, it’s definitely not Melfi. It’s gonna be Silvio. He’s been having an existential crisis that had been escalading ever since Tony found his painting in the last episode. Shocked over not being promoted, he lets his ego get in the way with tony and ends up sleeping with the fishes.

  • johnathan

aww crap, I meant Paulie. I still think it’s right though.

  • jen

I bet it’s Christopher (see the trailer). I bet Johnny Sack wants him dead and Paulie is the one that has to do it (see him crying). That’s my crazy guess…

  • Peggy

Without risking a visit from a couple of HBO legbreakers, I will say that Tony is effectively removed from the action for the following two episodes, seemingly trapped at a business conference and getting slapped around by Buddhist monks (I kid you not). Silvio (Steven Van Zandt) tries to fill the power vacuum and fails, to comic effect. Paulie discovers a “family secret” that shakes him to the core.
