M. Night Shyamalan's AmEx ad

145921__amex_lHere’s M. Night Shyamalan’s Oscar-night commercial for American Express, all two minutes of it. Yes, it’s pretty ego-tastic — Night himself (bottom left) seems awfully disturbed by the prospect of having to eat lunch among regular folks, and even the compliment from the waitress who recognizes him as the director of The Sixth Sense comes off as unsettling. But you can’t deny his effectiveness as a creator of creepy, button-pushing images (above left). I’m still not sure how this is supposed to get me to sign up for a credit card; it just makes me never want to eat in a restaurant again.

    “I see normal people”

I honestly had no clue who he was until the waitress finally addressed him. After that it made sense, and it works as a commercial for Amex. Unlike countless other celeb driven ads, this one makes me remember Amex is the reason for it. I still don’t like his films, but the ad does work as a way of me remembering Amex.

“The Sixth Sense” was okay. “Unbreakable” was better. “Signs” and “The Village” blew. I’m only seeing “Lady in the Water” because of Paul Giamatti and Bryce Dallas Howard. I honestly can’t think of a more overrated director than M. Night Shyamalan. He’s built a career on twist endings, but here’s something that’s more effective. You suck, M. Night Shyamalan. Direct and to the point. That’s a free gift from me to you.

This commercial is part of a series Gary Susman. There is one with Robert DeNiro, and one with Kate Winslet (I love the Kate Winslet one!!!). The theme is something like My Life, My Card, My AMEX. I think its just supposed to tell the viewer that no matter what your life is like, AMEX is the card for you.
Kate Winslet has a lot of drama in her life, so AMEX is the card for her because it’s hassel free.
Robert DeNiro loves New York, and AMEX loves New York and it’s accept all over the place there (in all the different burrows (or whatever the heck they’re called) ).
M Night is a weirdo, and AMEX doesn’t mind that. AMEX is for weirdos and is accepted in restaurants. (and I say weirdo with love, so don’t hate me fellow posters)

    Love the Kate Winslet commercial.

I like a few of his films, but I really hate his pretentiousness and ego. And ever-longer cameos. Unfortunately, it gets tougher and tougher to separate my dislike for the man and my appreciation of his artistry.

I love it. A sneak peak into M. Night’s surrealist vision of the world only makes me want to know more about this director. Part of me was thinking “David Lynch called and wants his commercial back”, but another part of me then thought “Yo, what if them two cats worked together? That would be outasite!”
Now, to keep it a little real, most of us figured out the Schtick to “the village” in the first ten minutes. So maybe the waitress could have mentioned Unbreakable instead?

The Kate Winslet ad is the best. It should run more. She was in Titanic, Eternal Sunshine, Neverland… and is married to an Oscar winning director, Sam Mendes. She still is under the radar. Am I off-topic yet?

    – he should only eat dinner then!
But you can’t deny his effectiveness as a creator of creepy, button-pushing images!
His movies are like Altzheimer, you can’t remember anything
