Forgive us, but PopWatch can’t get enough today of Stereogum or its MP3s of unlikely big-band swing covers of rock songs. This afternoon, it’s Elvis Costello’s live re-working of his 1977 hit ”Watching the Detectives,” with the Metropole Orkest, from his new album My Flame Burns Blue. You wouldn’t think the song’s spare instrumentation and stuttering reggae rhythm would lend themselves to an ornate big-band swing arrangement, but they do. The brassier sound also meshes well with the song’s noirish lyrics, which E.C. spits out with venomous fury. Invisible shivers will run down your spine.
