Tonight: 'Lost' pilot rerun

Categories: Lost

Tonight ABC is re-airing the pilot episode of Lost. While we’re sure many of you have already obsessively scoured the Season 1 DVD for hidden meaning, it’s still a good opportunity to reflect on that "gotcha" moment, the moment you knew you’d be hooked. (For me, it was the pilot getting ripped from the plane by an unseen force/creature/cloud of smoke.) In light of what we know now, is there anything new to be learned about The Monster, The Others, the castaways themselves? Report back with any newfound insight.

Gotcha moment? None. Watched the pilot and never returned. Definitely no regrets.

No particular moment I guess, the whole thing was just so well done that there was never any question that I would be watching this on a weekly basis. My only fear was that the general public that made hits out of things such as Full House and Fear Factor wouldn’t get it and it would be cancelled soon. Luckily, quality writing and acting still count for something.

this has got to be the dumbest show on tv… and the greatest flocking of the american public since orson welles’ ‘war of the worlds’ do you all realize they are all dead and in some version of hell/limbo? a computer on a island… where’s the power source? a polar bear… on a tropical island? fisherman in a boat….where’d they come from? the guy in a wheelchair can now walk? you’ve got to be kidding me! wake up folks… they’re not lost… they’re dead and their souls are lost! duh!

I didn’t catch it until the DVD. I was hooked from the first scene. Luckily I got it over the holidays so I was able to finish the entire season in two days. Now I don’t miss an episode.

Kate in her panties and bra? It was a good moment. And it kept me wanting more.
Lost does that, keep that wanting more factor high.
Kurt dismissed the show as being about the dead. OK, but I’m going to look for Kurt’s pulse.
And for Slooopwayneb, well American Idol is all your’s.
    Cheers.

Just one moment? Don’t think so. Two things struck me tonight as I rewatched (the third time?) the pilot episode. The first was what an impressive job the writers/producers did with the plane crash carnage — the visual effects are stunning, and in many ways more believeable, than effects I’ve seen in big budget action movies. The other thing that got me was how well the writers let the story unfold through letting you become familiar with the characters — slowly, with little bits and pieces…fragments, the way would might get to know someone in real life, but with the advantange of being able to witness aspects of their past. I thought the character development, particularly of Jack, was excellent…you really feel the humanity and vulnerability of the characters — that’s what I call good tv!

    Erik,
The producers have already debunked the “Purgatory” theory. I think they are a bit more sophisticated then hitting the audience over the head with the “Sixth Sense” ending. The facts that support the idea that they are “Lost Souls” is just a rouse to sustain viewer interest. Case-in-point: if they were dead why would they have to keep punching the code into a computer? The polar bear came straight out of Walt’s comic book. Reminds me of the Classic Trek episode “Shore Leave.” This is the best series since “The Prisoner.”

  • Jakeem

Well, now we know why we haven’t seen much of Walt this season. In the pilot episode, he looks like a kid. Maybe he looks too grown up now for someone who’s only been on the island setting for six weeks or so!

  • Renato

I do belive they will (soon) kill off Walt.
There’s no way they could bring him back all grown up.
But the whole crash sequence in the begining of the pilot is just beautifully done. That’s when I got me hooked into the series.
What got me to STAY hooked, was the french message that has been playing for sixteen years.
And I this got me to think of how far the story went from one season to another.
The people that complain about season 2, and lack of answers certanly didn’t get that.
And for the last time: they’re not dead!

Given that the polar bear is also in the initiation video for the swan, coupled with the shark in the water bearing the Dharma logo in Episode 2.2, it’s possible the bear was brought there by the Dharma people. Still pretty fantastic, but another possibility besides “Walt conjured it with his mind”. He could have CALLED to it with his mind (like the bird in the flashback ep), but not conjured it.
One thing that stuck out last night—the first creature Jack sees? Vincent, the dog. Who tends to appear at really, really interesting times throughout the show (before Shannon dies, before Sun got kidnapped). Could mean nothing, but sure seems interesting.

I tuned in just to see what this new series was about but I was blown away by how well the crash sequence was done.. I had to keep telling myself this was a series and not some hollywood movie.. the gotcha scene for me was when the engine blew up… I kept yelling at my roommates to come see this incredible show, of course they didn’t then but now they love it now… And obviously sloopwayneb isn’t as done with this show as he would like us to believe otherwise why is he on here? Mabye he just doesn’t get it……

whats interesting is if you watch closely when the engine blows up you see this black object (probably the black smoke)swoop down from the sky at the engine and when it passes over it is when it explodes then flys back upward and out of frame…its really quick and you have to watch for it, but its pretty weird when you notice it

The gotcha moment for me was during the carnage scene when Shannon is just standing there screaming her head off. That moment just seemed so real to me and gave me chills. Every single episode gives me chills now.

When they first see (hear) the Monster on the beach…
Did anyone else catch Locke’s speech about backgammon-? About it being playing by ancient civilizations over 5,000 years ago (older than Jesus)-? And there are TWO SIDES to the game – one dark and one light-? I thought that was very telling about SOMETHING – and also something I never caught before…

One thing that I noticed with last nights PILOT rerun that I hadn’t noticed before were the grinding metallic sounds on the plane before it ripped apart. Sounded ALOT like the “smoke monster” to me….
They say we will know why the plane went down before the end of THIS season. I am thinking the Electromagnetic force in the Hatch had something to do with the crash and the “smoke monster”
    Anyone with me??
