Flowers die. Candy adds to that little spare tire some of us are trying so so so hard to burn off. Diamonds are forever, but they’re hella expensive. That’s why this Valentine’s Day, PopWatchers in the know are giving the gift of music to themselves and/or the ones they love. And while we’re suckers for the classics (Al Green’s ”Let’s Stay Together” gets us every time), we thought it’d be more interesting to compile a playlist of great love songs from the past 12 months or so. Yeah, some of ‘em are a little sappy, others are a little dark, and a few are downright melancholy, but who says everybody’s celebrating Feb. 14? No matter what your mood, though, these gems (all complete with free AOL Music links) ought to have some effect on that old heart of yours. If not, feel free to suggest substitutions or additions — or suggest a whole new list! — in the comments section below.
"Be Without You," Mary J. Blige

Loved that you included Coldplay’s “Fix You.” Other Coldplay picks could’ve been “A Message,” “Swallowed in the Sea,” and “Green Eyes.” But how ’bout Madonna’s “Crazy for You”? It was picked #1 Love Song on an EW.com poll last year, after all.

do people even read before posting? do they not understand that 12 months = 1 year? songs from the last year people!! as our good friend beyonce directs us to do–b/c def lepard, as “kitschy” as they may be, well, they’re gone, dead, dunzo–check on it.
i’d like to add a few selections for those who don’t swoon at the thought of Hallmark’s Annual Attempt to Commercially Humiliate Anyone Who is Without a Relationship…umm…Day.
“Goodbye My Lover” & “You’re Beautiful,” James Blunt
“One,” Mary J feat. U2
“Since You Been Gone,” Kelly Clarkson
“Shake It Off,” Mariah
and, i suppose, on a lighter note:
“Bless the Broken Road,” Rascal Flatts
“Ordinary People,” John Legend
and for those who are celebrating their union w/Christ:
“Jesus Take the Wheel,” Carrie Underwood
enjoy!
Im going to preface this with yes, this song wasnt exactly from the last year, but it was on one of the top selling slbums of 2005. And yes, its incredibly sappy and a bit of a downer. But “Beautiful Disaster” by Kelly Clarkson.
And what Valentine playlist is complete without a little Marvin… “Let’s Get It On” people.
Nice list! I would add
“Worth the Wait” by Luce (or)
“Sweetest Smile” by Luce
“Better Together” by Jack Johnson (or)
“Banana Pancakes” by Jack Johnson
“My One and Only Love” by Chris Botti (with Paula Cole)
“Wildflower” by Sheryl Crow
“First Day of My Life” by Bright Eyes would be the perfect song.
Madonna – Get Together
I think ‘EVerytime We Touch’ by Cascada should be on this list.
Cathy, nice choices with the Jack Johnson–but speaking of him, I’d also add “Do You Remember.”
For those of us flying solo this Valentine’s Day, might I suggest “Nearest Distant Shore” by Trisha Yearwood. For those more hopeful romantics, hmmmmmm….I’m stumped
I bet that u look good on the dance floor, Artic Monkeys
Erotica, Madonna
When the time’s right, Akon
I can’t help it if I’m still in love with you,Johny Cash
And I love her – the beatles
I’m counting this one in the “…or so” portion, as the album came out in summer 2004: “Flying High” by Jem. That song gets me every time.
