Dueling sequels: 'Narnia II' vs. 'Harry Potter V'

91751__narniapotter_lBreak out the Mr. Pibb and Red Vines: the next Chronicles of Narnia installment is now officially underway. Disney announced Wednesday that deals are in place for director Andrew Adamson and all four kids (far left) to return in Prince Caspian, in which the siblings return to Narnia and help the title character retake the realm from his usurping uncle Miraz.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. announced yesterday that filming will start next week on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, under new director David Yates, with the three young principals (left) returning, and with Vera Drake‘s Imelda Staunton as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Both sequels are due in 2007.

Which one are you looking forward to more?

I’m all over the Harry Potter 5 flick! Can’t wait!

  • Jamie

It has to be Harry Potter!

  • Scott

Harry Potter hands down. Narnia was good in a watch it with a child’s mind sort of way, but, it can’t even come close to comparing to the amazing Harry Potter movies, which become darker and more intriguing with each episode.

I can’t wait for HP5, HP4 was the best ever! These things just keep getting better and better. Narnia was a big disppointment for me!

For the life of me, I just don’t “get” the Harry Potter craze. I watched all four Harry Potters, and they seem to be recycling the same story. For all the “danger” HP seems to be getting, there’s no tension–he’s got three more movies to do! The school is entered into a contest where one of their own could die… and I kept thinking what-the-heck-school is this?!? If my master-the-magical-arts Learning Annex session ever held such a thing, there’d be lawsuits a-flyin’…
Narnia has earned its classic status. Hands down.

I agree with you Nick, I am not really understanding this whole HP thing…the Goblet of Fire bored me to tears, and the first two were so rediculously cheesy (I did, however, love the Prisoner of Azkaban…bam?). I am definitely going with Narnia…it may look just like child’s play (and no, I dont mean that creepy doll movie), but what the movie is REALLY about makes it so much more insightful than your typical everyday fx-fest kids movie.

It has to be Narnia – Harry Potter is not even worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence as the Narnia series. C.S. Lewis writes for all ages, while J.K. Rowling is clearly a childrens author. Though I have only seen one Harry Potter movie (I believe it was the second, though I can’t be sure) comparing that to The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is a joke. Lazy Sunday or not, I prefer Narnia…

Gosh. That’s like asking me to choose which one of my daughters I love more… It just can’t be done! I am all over BOTH of them. And I am THRILLED that Disney is sticking to C.S. Lewis’ original order of the Chronicles by making Prince Caspian next. Because the publishers who– in a stroke of apparent madness– decided to publish the books chronologically rather than sequentially? Morons.

Personally, I’m excited for HP5. There are some really vivid characters in this one and a lot of the action takes place in locations the other movies have yet to show us. That’s enough to keep me excited for it. And I’m sure Imelda Staunton will be a great Dolores Umbridge. She better be vicious. Oh, and Gary Oldman’s got some heavier lifting to do this time so it’ll be cool to see him at work.

I’ll take a Christian allegory over a veiled taste of the occult any day.

It’s all about HP5…however said that HP is written for children is clearly mad. So many adults read the books it’s ridiculous. HP5 is going to be a hot movie, I can’t wait for the battle at the Dept. of Mysteries.

  • Laura

Definitely Chronicles of Narnia! CS Lewis was 10 times the writer JK Rowling is (note that I’m not dissing her talent, just lauding him highly). What a master of allegory!

  • Allison

I agree with Nikki M…Rowling’s writing appeals as much to adults as Lewis’. While Narnia was a good children’s flick, the HP movies keep getting better and better. #4 was excellent, and the Order of the Phoenix was a great book. Here’s to Harry!

  • Joanie

In defense of the writing for children comment, it has been commonly said that adults who read her work enjoy it, but clearly see that it is written in a style for children. Both are extremely talented, but I have to agree that Lewis is just a much better writer.

  • Martha

It’s all about Narnia, kids. Harry Potter is pretty good, but I don’t go back and read HP every few years. The Narnia books are also a good intro to Lewis’s “adult” fiction, which is absolutely amazing.
