Craig Ferguson's Must-Weep TV

Categories: Television

143838__craig_lCraig Ferguson delivered a remarkable hour of TV on Monday’s Late Late Show when he turned his usual 15-minute comic monologue (which has made his wee-hours chatfest a must-view for me) into a eulogy for his dad, who died the day before. It was a proper Scottish wake, both funny and poignant. Then he went on to discuss big issues of life, death, and spirituality with his guests, Dr. Drew Pinsky and John Ritter’s widow Amy Yasbeck. It was a moving, wrenching, emotional hour of the kind you rarely see on TV outside of Oprah. I can’t really do justice to Ferguson’s amazing eulogy, but you can watch all 15 minutes of it at CBS’ Late Late Show website; click either the link marked ”January 30, 2006,” or the one marked ”A Tribute To His Father.”

I saw this and I agree. It took a lot of guts for CBS to permit Ferguson to use his show to speak openly about his grief. Kudos to both. Ferguson’s monologue (which is all I saw of the show) was more moving than anything that’s been on Oprah in 10 years.

Wow,talk about out of the loop. I didn’t even know my man has his own show! Isn’t he the dude who always gave Drew Carey a hard time on the Drew Carey show? If so, I need to be watching that talk show since years ago!
And my condolences for the passing of his father.

  • Ned

Yes, it was very touching, one of the most moving things I’ve seen on tv since Lettermans first show after 9/11. Craig Ferguson isn’t the funniest talk show host, but he’s the most likeable, I watch his show because of that. He even has writers on his show a lot, a rarity for late night talk shows.

  • ALLAN

Craig is the best late night host by far. Leno has become mean and Letterman is becomong goofy. He should replace one of the aforementioned and soon.

  • pfitz

    Quite lovely.
Thanks, Gary Susman, for posting this–otherwise I would have missed it!

  • Sarah C

That was beautiful. There was so much pride and love and anguish in Craig’s voice. I’m glad for him that he had a chance to say goodbye; it doesn’t always happen that way.

  • Sam

I second Connie’s comments. I have never seen his show. Ever. But that opening was remarkable television. What a great tribute.

  • Kristin

YES. I am a Conan girl, but before I could change the channel he started to talk about what had happened and I ended up watching the entire hour. It was touching and sweet and sad and humorous and heart-breakingly honest. If you haven’t seen the monologue, I encourage you to watch. I’m so glad CBS posted the entire 15 minutes.

Am I the only one for whom the links aren’t working? They just don’t do anything…and I really want to see what sounds like a wonderful goodbye.

  • zonie

Didn’t see the show, as I had to work, but wanted to comment that I just love Craig. I like Conan too and kinda switch back and forth between them depending on their guests, but always prefer Craigs monologe, email, and skits. He’s so funny and charming. I especially like that he is so relaxed and easy with his guests. He’s the best of all the nighttime hosts, conversing with his guests.

    link no es woking

I have had no opinion of Craig Ferguson. Until now. This was incredibly moving and powerful and beautiful. What a wonderful tribute to his father. Never watched the show before but I just might have to now. I have chills. That was amazing.

  • Trish

Thank you for suggesting we watch this, what a wonderful send-off for a father well loved. For those who had problems I was able to get it to work using Firefox for web access, IE didn’t work for me either and this is very much worth watching.

I’ve been hooked on Craig Ferguson for a couple of months now, as his opening monologues are phenomenal. My loyalty to Craig is now fully locked up. His monologue eulogizing his father was one of the most touching moments I’ve seen on television – real emotion, real feelings, humor, pathos, and honesty – all things we see way to little of on television these days. My heart goes out to him, as do my thanks for his refreshing honesty.

  • Nicole

Wow – that was beautiful. His Dad would have been proud I’m sure. I’ll have to start making a point to catch his show more often.

  • Susan

Love, love, love My Craiggers! The best thing that’s happened to Late Night since Carson. If I had to define Craig and his show in one word it would be BRILLILANT – He’s charming, classy, honest, intelligent, witty, handsome beyond belief – I think I’m in love! How I wish he’d replace Leno, whom I’m certain is a wondeful guy, but. . . . Dave has gotten a bit goofier and some of his spiffs, like “Will It Float,” is an insult to my intelligence. Share Craig with a wider audience – he has so many talents to offer – the world would be a better (smarter and happier) place to be!

I just discovered Craig a few weeks ago and I can’t get enough of him!! I watch his monologues on youtube all the time — they make my day! Does anyone know how to email Craig?

  • lookwithin

There is not enough on youtube that I can get when it comes to Craig Ferguson. I did not know men like him existed in Hollywood. He is strong (emotionally) beyond imagination, quick witted with a heart of gold, and beautiful (YES physically) to match his wisdom.
It takes balls to go in the opposite direction of where world (other hosts) is going and he does it with charm

  • Sherry

I love Craig Ferguson. He needs to be moved to 9:00 p.m. I’m not getting enough sleep!!!!

  • Susan

I spent two hrs. last night emailin Craig but to no avail. I need to talk to u Craig? Can ya just send me your email address I promise Im not dilusional. Maybe justa bit. But I’d really appreciate it if i could send these things off without them comin back to me. Theyre the sorta emails to read when you really have nothing to do. Now i know that must be challenging. Just file them under Bored and that would be great!!
    Blessings!!!

Craig Ferguson is the funniest fXXker on free TV.
    I love his stage~self,
Oopsie, now the corporation will take him away.

  • Truly Bored

What are you people thinking? CF is such a complete bore. I went to the taping of the show. I can honestly say I wasted an hour of my life I will never get back. He does ridiculous faces in the camera. Has a guy that forces and expects the audience to laugh/react to his slapstick shtick. I was utterly and completely bored. Forget the part that they use two audience for each show. We were lucky enough to see the segment with the logger. CF is a waste of tv time. I would rather watch reruns of password with Allen Luden. Oh yeah, then there was the tramp that was throwing herself at him on stage that ended up getting on the air. If you are not young and pretty, forget about getting a good seat. The only reason you would possibly laugh at Curly on stage is because of the promp guy waving his arms. I have tried to watch the show and always turn the channel out of boredom. Go back to Scotland!!

  • Jessie

Layoff everyone, he’s mine. Right Craig? Right?

  • Katie

Craig Ferguson is really funny. I watch his show every night and I love it! Craig Ferguson is awesome!

  • Michael Rwamunahe

Somebody (probably Ed McMahon) said that Craig was the closest thing to Johnny Carson. I without question agree with him (no disrespect to Letterman or Leno). Especially in the fact the both Carson and Ferguson experienced tragedy at the peak of their careers. Carson when he lost his son Rick in 1991 and paid tribute to him on his show, and Ferguson when he lost his father. I have seen both clips 100 times. God Bless you Craig, may you have just as long a run as Carson had (30 years, maybe even more).

  • rpmtech

hey Craig, new to this blog stuff.
kk let me ask you a question!
The world as a people is always trying to better themselves and try to develop new ways to enhance our societies. We continuously strive to fix all of our problems and the politics that surround them. Middle class Americans are losing there jobs to China (as well as many other countries) and free trade is contributing to the suppression of many countries with poorly structured governments like China and Mexico. I am Scottish like many Americans and believe that it is just not this difficult. Simply put, do you think we should lower the salary to all politicians to less than 100,000 dollars a year for the House of Representatives and the senators? I think the president should get like 110,000 a year and that any other income should be reported by “all” politician’s to ensure that no corrupt judgments are made that involve the creation of state or federal laws that could incorporated to the betterment of any person that may benefit (by affiliation) from such laws being made.
