Here are some of the freshest new movie trailers to hit the Web:
Friends With Money (Spring 2006) The opening-night feature at Sundance, this comedy starring Catherine Keener, Frances McDormand, and Joan Cusack (the friends with money) and Jennifer Aniston (as the Friend without money) looks like more of the same from filmmaker Nicole Holofcener (Lovely and Amazing, Walking and Talking): some wry and painful laughs, some sharp social observations, and some drab visuals. Hey, Sony Pictures Classics, you want people to buy tickets, you should show footage of Aniston in that skimpy maid’s uniform.
Ultraviolet (Feb. 24) Milla Jovovich stars in what looks like a melange of her Resident Evil movies, Dark Angel, Elektra, X-Men, Aeon Flux, and a little Kill Bill thrown in for good measure. In short, every movie of the last few years that called for a kick-butt woman wearing Spandex. In which Jovovich looks great, by the way, but that doesn’t shake this clip’s sense of been-there-done-that.
Silent Hill (April 21) Over at JoBlo.com, they say this trailer makes the film look like the one videogame adaptation that won’t suck. After seeing the clip, in which Radha Mitchell looks for her little girl in an ash-covered ghost town, I’m not so sure, though the fact that Roger Avary (Pulp Fiction, The Rules of Attraction) is credited with the screenplay gives me some hope.
The Devil and Daniel Johnston (March 31) This Sundance 2005 favorite is finally seeing the light of day. A documentary about the more-than-tormented singer-songwriter, this looks from the trailer like it walks the line between being fascinating and poignant and being sentimental and condescending; let’s hope it tips toward the former.
