'Desperate Housewives': Maria Conchita Alonso joins the cast

9225__maria_lWhen I heard that Maria Conchita Alonso will be playing Gaby’s mother, Lucia, on the Feb. 19 episode of Desperate Housewives, my first reaction was: Is she old enough? Guess so. IMDb says the actress is 48, so maybe Lucia gave birth when she was about 17. She sounds like perfect casting to play Eva Longoria’s mother, though I’m a bit worried about the way Lucia is described, as a woman who surfaces in her daughter’s life after having gone through a string of husbands. Sounds an awful lot like Susan’s mom, Sophie (Lesley Ann Warren), who wore out her welcome pretty quickly. Let’s hope the Gaby-Lucia relationship doesn’t turn out to be as tedious or annoying.

Who else would you like to see on Housewives? How about Brandy as Andrew van de Kamp’s sassy best friend and confidante? Heather Locklear as Gaby’s former runway rival? Roseanne as Lynette’s wiseacre hairdresser? Rowan Atkinson as the Applewhites’ nosy insurance adjustor? The sky’s the limit.

    Yep, she’s too young.

Sounds like another move to expand the diversity of the show (see Betty Applewhite) to expand viewers instead of actually trying to improve the hackneyed plotlines of the second season…

i would like to see the Desperate Housewives show get better. Forget about who plays whose mother! This show is going the way of Will & Grace – too many actors playing a role in the show.

Please remember -millions and millions of us DONT watch this lousy show – the majority of us (thank God) aren’t taken in by unrealistic shock value story lines – meets constant sexploitation meets greedy-vain-selfish-conceited white (and latino-Gaby)trash. There is a genius out there in the wings (right now) who is going to create/write the really “next big thing” series about what REAL American housewives deal with everyday- something that will ring universal, warts and all. Not some voyeuristic phony baloney Wisteria fantasy platform for idiotic selfish themes. Show us some real life stuff. It will be funnier when it should be, more compelling when it should be and it is coming soon. Series television is barely scratching the surface of what could me much better and MUCH bigger ratings. Desperate Housewives is a zero attention span, crack cocaine mentality show that is mostly vanity flash and even with its ratings please take note that a 28,000,000 viewing demographic still leaves 266,000,000 of us NOT WATCHING…

    Paul Ruebens needs work.

If we’re doing casting, how about Charisma Carpenter as Gabrielle’s sister? I think it would be genius to see the two of them square off.

    Don’t post here if you don’t like/watch the show….

  • Msally

Wow, Maria Conchita Alonso looks GREAT.

  • John

I would loooove to see Heather Locklear on the show! She would be perfect. Then it would be a Melrose Place reunion…except better writing!

  • greg

Hey Gina, truth hurts huh? Go jump in a lake. Anybody who wants to can post here or anywhere within reasonable bounds. If you dont like it,too bad.

  • John Doe

how about “Desperate Whore-wives” as a new name for the show???

  • lucy

“crack cocaine mentality”?!?! that’s a little over the top, wouldn’t you say? I hold a steady job, am a wife and mother and happen to enjoy this show. It’s e-n-t-e-r-t-a-i-n-i-n-g to some people. If that’s not you then fine, no one cares that you don’t like it so don’t worry about those of us that do.

  • Sam

Focus on your protagonists and keep it simple, show more of Lynette’s kids + I would like to see Pamela Sue Martin guest

  • MadBrian

How about Elaine Stritch as Edie’s grandmother?

  • Pam

Bring back Mama Solis’ Lupe Ontiveros as her twin sister, Carlos’ aunt!!!
    That would be exciting!
