Snap Judgment: 'Skating With Celebrities'

Categories: Reality TV

It’s not that I’m sadistic, but after enduring weeks of previews for Fox’s Skating With Celebrities, I have to ask: Where’s the carnage? I thought we’d see at least a few spectacular crashes during last night’s season premiere. Instead, the closest thing to disaster was Todd Bridges’ nicely masked stumble that somehow got incorporated into his routine with pro Jenni Meno. I thought Bridges was a hoot, and considerably more entertaining than Full House Star Dave Coulier and partner Nancy Kerrigan (who looked a little wobbly to me), but somehow, the judges praised the latter duo, putting them in second, while sticking Bridges and Meno all the way down in fifth. But maybe that’s just my untrained eye failing me.

The two things you can’t dispute about the show, however, are that Fox NFL announcer Jillian Barberie looks like a shoo-in for the gold, and that judge Sir John Nicks is no Simon Cowell. In fact, with lame-o one-liners like: "Would you rather have a hockey stick in your hand or Nancy?" he’s not even the next Paula Abdul.

What did you think of Skating With Celebrities? And do you plan to watch Episode 2?

I thought it was boring and I won’t be watching next week. There is such a huge difference in ability, that there isn’t any question who will win. Waste of time.

Michael, I’d have to agree with you, I was so setup for weeks and weeks by previews, I was hoping to see alot more of the scenes behind the scenes. All in all, I loved the show, I felt for Todd Bridges, while he was hilarious at skating, he seems to be a bit of the underdog, who’ll i’ll root for!! The one judge is terrible, who does he think he is? No Simon that’s for sure. I’ll be watching next week. Thanks.

Ok just whose idea was this piece of drivel?!! And who do I have to take a hit out on to get this nonsense cancelled?!!

  • Kate

Oh, there have to be former hockey players in this for it to be any good!

  • MadBrian

I tuned in to see the celebs crash & burn, but I was surprised to find myself rooting for them to succeed. Agree completely that Todd & Jenni were shafted, and Dave & Nancy were overrated. But, hasn’t that always been true of Ms. Kerrigan? Should be interesting to see how good Jillian will be by the end of the competition.

Technically Dave Couiler has been on the ice before because he can play ice hockey (not just because he is Canadian). They seriously need to call it “second-hand celebrtities on ice”, and Coulier needs to go back to his true calling-cartoon voice over work. He rocked as “Babie Animal” on “The Muppet Babies”.

  • MiniMoo

    “What-choo talking about, Boitano?!?!”

  • Kari

Why won’t Dave Coulier just go away? Please, please, please make him cut. it. out.

  • Krista

I thought that Nancy and Dave was totally over rated and I really though that Todd and Jenni were soo much better. In fact, I though that Kristy S. and her partner Lloyd E. were even better than Nancy and Dave. But it’s like Lloyd Eisler said.. he’s face that kind of scoring all his career. I’m a huge figure skating fan and I have to say that I agree with him, he has. How could they expect this guy who if anyone is familiar with him skating do the big tricks with a partner of less then a few weeks.
Speaking of Bruce Jenner, he was like Herman Munster on ice but I really liked Herman Munster and thought that of all the skaters there, Bruce did very good. Wasn’t he the only of the stars to have done a jump. (waltz jump) and I certainly did think that he should have scored better.
As for the the judges, Sir Nick certainly is definately no Simon Cowel, Dorothy Hamill is a lot like Paula, and the jury is still out on Mark Lund.

  • Paige

Yeah I expected more crashing and burning too… but it was easy to root for people to do well.
I thought Todd/Jenni and Kristi/Lloyd were much better than Bruce, although Tai surely helps him out by being so graceful. But back to the other pairs, I was really impressed. They don’t have to tell Kristi in her first show that she can do better. Maybe wait one bloody week before you tell her to do something faster.
The obviously at-ease skaters Jillian and Dave seem to have a real edge on the rest of the competition. I rolled my eyes as soon as I saw Dave with Nancy, I wonder who Fox wants to win, not!!!
Well I’ll tune in again next week. Not so sure about the whole show yet, but it was an easy hour and more fun to me than Dancing with the Stars 2.

  • Cindy

I didn’t expect anything great but wow, was I surprised!
Bruce Jenner is clearly out of his element but that Jullian Barberie and her partner are reeeealy smooth.
Why are these people called celebrities?

  • Diane Benoit

I can’t believe the judges are expecting any more from beginning skaters. Do they know how hard it is to even stay up on skates when you have not skated before. The contest is very uneven and unfair. Kurt Browning has never skated pairs before and he is paired with someone who never skated before. What about that so-called non-skater who skated until she was 13. She is certainly not a beginner and has a big advantage.

  • Bill

I found the show more interesting than I thought it would be. I must admit that being a fan of Jillian for years, I kept cheering for her overexposed boob to pop out!

  • MarieH

I thought the show was fun to watch. Lot’s can happen over the next several weeks, so those of us who think we know who wins….. well, I hope we’re surprised in the end! Anything can happen and I for one will keep watching to find out. Figure Skating is definitely a difficult sport and for any of the “stars” to learn what they did in such a short amount of time is pretty amazing. For any of you who don’t agree – please, put on a pair of skates and hit the ice before you judge.

I THOUGHT THE SHOW WAS JUST ABOUT THE GREATEST REALITY SHOW EVER. CAN’T WAIT TILL NEXT WEEK. SCOTT IS THE PERFECT HOST AND SO KIND. MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS THAT THE MEAN JUDGE MADE REFERENCE TO LACK OF TECHNIQUE. GIVE THEM A BREAK THEY JUST LEARNED. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE BRUCE WIN BECAUSE HE HAS WORKED THE HARDEST. I’M A FORMER SKATER AND IT IS UNBELIEVABLE WHAT THEY HAVE DONE IN A SHORT TIME.

  • Nate

i reckon Jenni Meno is hot and sexy and i love her to bits, she a great dancer, but she had a clown of a dancer who crack jokes about his own race. my comments are to jenni meno i loved her hot little short skirt she weared on the show, but she shouldive not weared knickers under her short skirt, from my pointaview she wouldove gotten more points if she didnt wear knickers underneath.

  • Nate

Jenni Meno weared such a hot short denim skirt on the show, she has a cute lil bottom too i would love to touch it.
