J.K. Rowling: Death dominates 'Harry Potter'

Tagged: ,

Harry Potter may be known for his way with wizardry, but he owes his success to the Grim Reaper. ”My books are largely about death,” author J.K. Rowling says in a new interview with Tatler magazine. ”They open with the death of Harry’s parents. There is Voldemort’s obsession with conquering death and his quest for immortality at any price.”

Hmmm. Just thinking out loud here, but given Rowling’s extraordinary success (and the massive fortune it’s brought her), maybe it’s time PopWatch took a darker tone, too.

    That’s what Steven King’s for …

With all the nasty stuff us “popwatch bullies” write? Dude, with whitewalled backgrounds this tone is dark enough!
Though it would be cool if Mr. King started posting his little tidbits here everynow and then, or maybe we could get Anne Rice to guest on here now and then? Like Beavis would say “that would be cool”

Rowling’s take on death is nothing like Stephen King’s. It’s not horror; it’s reality — full of sadness, loss and a pervading sense of loneliness. She paints the picture well. For such a down-to-earth, witty woman, she clearly knows melancholy. That’s what happens when you lose your mom at 25. I should know….

Trish, I think he meant that there’s no point for PopWatch to take a darker tone, because that’s what Stephen King’s for… nothing about Rowling.
