The Strokes’ First Impressions of Earth lands in stores today, but you can also hear it streaming in its entirety at AOL Music. I’d say that, aside from some sonic stretching on songs like ”Juicebox,” the rockers have decided to take the if-it-ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it approach to songwriting and arranging on their third CD. By the way, is it just me, or have they lifted the chorus on ”Razorblade” from Barry Manilow’s ”Mandy”? Check it out, readers, and report back.

I’ve been listening to it all day. I guess I wouldn’t say they’ve stretched a lot lot LOT, but I think they’ve stretched, for sure. The album still sounds like the Strokes, but doesn’t sound exactly like the last two albums. Kneejerk response: I like it a lot. Better than Room on Fire. “Ask Me Anything,” a droll comment on bands with political platforms, my immediate standout.
Stop hating. I think Jessica Shaw might say:
IN: Enjoying the talented Strokes’ cool new album.
5 MINUTES AGO: Strokes backlash,
OUT: Strokes’ “next big thing” hype.
I’m sick of next big things anyhow.
I suppose this album does play it safe by not straying far from the Strokes’ usual formula but the end result is their best album that you don’t blow through in half an hour. This is an album you can sink your teeth into. The melodies are solid and catchy and there are almost no tracks that are disposable and they are all decent lengths. Overall, a solid effort.
Yes, it totally bites Manilow! On first listen, which I usually reserve for just letting a CD wash over me and don’t look for anything specific, that jumped out of the speakers and throttled me!
The Strokes are performing on fuse on January 16, 9pm EST!! They are going to play tracks from the new album. to find out your local channel go to http://www.fuse.tv
