Deals: Jude Law, Alan Cumming

155519__law_l-Next time Jude Law (left) professes his love in a romantic comedy, will you be able to take him seriously? Columbia Pictures believes you will, having cast him in Holiday (not to be confused with the classic Cary Grant-Katharine Hepburn comedy of the same name). It’s a romantic quadrangle from writer/director Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give) starring Law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black. Well, jeez, if the other male romantic lead is Jack Black, that’s kind of stacking the deck in Law’s favor, isn’t it?

-Alan Cumming is directing and starring in Suffering Man’s Charity. The erstwhile Nightcrawler plays a man who accidentally kills a struggling novelist, then takes credit for his manuscript. Anne Heche, Carrie Fisher, and Henry Thomas costar.

-Now that Paramount is buying DreamWorks, what’s it actually getting in terms of DreamWorks movies in development? Not much, it appears. There’s Dreamgirls, Clint Eastwood’s World War II movie Flags of Our Fathers, Zach Braff’s comedy The Last Kiss, and the Amanda Bynes soccer comedy She’s the Man. Paramount also gets the services of Steven Spielberg (who has no directing jobs in the works at the moment) and it gets the right to distribute DreamWorks Animation movies (like the next Shrek), but it won’t own them. Still, Paramount’s own 2006 slate includes only nine movies (including tentpole Mission: Impossible: III and Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center), so anything that helps the studio increase market share is probably welcome.
