P
rops to Mariah Carey, for her well-deserved Grammy coup this morning, earning eight nominations to lead the list, alongside fellow eight-time nominees John Legend and the ever-modest Kanye West. (You can read a list of nominees in the major categories here.) EW.com will be posting an in-depth analysis of the nominations later this morning, but here are my two cents.
For the most part, I’d say this is a not too surprising list, though as usual, there are a few inexplicable quirks. Paul McCartney for Album of the Year? Gorillaz up for Record of the Year? A country act (Rascal Flatts) up for Song of the Year? (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) Big-sellers Coldplay shut out of the major categories? (They got three in the Rock field, though.) And where’s the love for Fiona Apple’s Extraordinary Machine? Finally, if Kanye’s ”Gold Digger” wins an award, do we have to hear collaborator Jamie Foxx do his Ray Charles impression again?

Mariah Carey? Oh Please! I’m waiting for another nervous breakdown, so she can go into hiding again. Where she belongs!!! Go U2.
It’s always a disgrace. Beck’s Quero should have been in the major categories besides Paul. Love Keane but didn’t their cd come out in May 2004? My pick for best new artist, Leela James, where is her nom? Look at the male pop vocal category noms, you will laugh out loud. IS Hollaback Girl a vocal? Way to go Mariah. Hope Kanye doesn’t show.
Fiona Apple is one of the best albums of the year and why is she in the pop category? Gwen Stefani’s album was way blah! Kelly Clarkson was way better. Why is the Grammy always choosing their nominees from what they hear constantly on the radio. At least U2 got some love.
Did anyone else notice The White Stripes have been nominated for best Alternative Album AND best POP performance by a duo or group? I agree that GUERO should have received more nominations as Franz Ferdinand and the Killers.
Can someone explain to me why there are not individual awards for alternative music? No best song, no best vocal. What gives?
Inexplicable quirk????? A country song can be nominated for Song of the Year When will you realize that it is great music just as much as what ever your listen to is great music. Great music should get recognized, no matter what genre. Unless i’m wrong song of the year covers all genres, not just Pop/Rock/R&B/Rap. You said “Not that there is anything wrong with that” Clearly you think otherwise or you would not be shocked.
My girl Fantasia got 4 noms!!!!
Why did most of the R&B vocal noms come from the Luther Vandross tribute cd but the cd itself did not get a nomination?
So what’s up with Kelly Clarkson getting shut out of the major catagories? Record and Album of the year noms were deserved for Since U Been Gone and Breakaway, they were amazing.. at least she got her pop noms.. but it’s pretty crazy she didn’t get more…
I thought it was a mistake that “This Love” by Maroon 5 was nominated for Pop Performance by a Duo or Group…didn’t that album come out three years ago? Why is it still getting nominated?!
Bruce Springstein? Fantasia? Paul McCartney? WHAT??? Who is listening to this? Why not add William Hung while they’re at it?
The Grammys try really hard to be relevant, but succeed less and less each year. What used to be a real yardstick of talent has turned into a “something for everyone” awards show. Ick.
I’d have to echo the comments of other “popwatchers” where is the love for Kelly Clarkson? “Breakaway” was a far better album than Gwen’s, and “Since U Been Gone” would outshine the increasingly annoying “Hollaback Girl” any day.
I really think that Kelly didn’t get the love she deserves simply because she is “the new kid on the block.” She wasn’t taken seriously until this year, and if she can follow up “Breakaway” with an even better album- then you’d better watch out because she will be the Grammy queen.
Maroon 5 are nominated for “This Love” (oh God, I can’t believe I am justifying this) because it is taken from their live album that was released this year. Adam has chops – but do we really need another showing of Maroon 5? This seems very 2004.
Mariah made the best CD of the year, so I’m glad she got some love. Go Mimi; hope she takes them all!
Gary, I’d like to know why you think it’s laughable or unbelievable that a country song is nominated for Song of the Year?
I agree. Why did Extraordinary Machine get so underrated this year? Fiona Apple’s album is way better than Love, Angel, Music, Baby or Breakaway. And why is she in the Pop Vocal Category? Oh well. But I say it’s between Extraordinary Machine and Breakaway. I think the stupidest nomination this year is Paul McCartney’s album for Album of the Year. Who heard that album? They should’ve replaced Paul McCartney with Fiona Apple. Come on, show some love for Fiona!
Just when I think the Grammy committees have their collective heads out of their collective butts (i.e., noms for McCartney, Nickel Creek, Gorillaz), they go and show that apparently, sometimes they’re deaf (i.e., noms for Black Eyed Peas and Mariah Carey).

mariah. ick.
Grammy seems to be nominating based on popuarity (“Hollaback Girl”?).. Because of You should have been nominated not Since u Been gone. mariah isn’t that great anymore.. kelly is way underrated at the grammy’s
I was extremely happy to see Paul, U2, and Coldplay get some credit for their amazing albums this year. Although everyone seems to be dissing Paul’s nom’s on here, I beg to differ.
Paul was making great music before some of the nom’s were born, and his newest proves that he is still an amazing songwriter and storyteller.
I was surprised that Coldplay landed in the Rock category considering their previous wins were in the alternative category.
I’d also like to note that these three acts were the best live shows of the summer/fall, based on their earnings and the fact that I saw all three and experienced all three in wonderment.
I have a question: Why does this years list of best new artists suck?
John Legend was the only one of the nominees to snab any other nominations (besides the one other nom for Ciara).
Somehow, Fantasia can recieve 4 nominations and not get a best new artist bid, and The Arcade Fire can grab two – but again – no best new? What gives! Even Amerie (wow) got more noms than Fall Out Boy, Sugarland and Keane. If these are our best new artists…where are their other nominations?
I’m upset. Fiona Apple’s Extraordinay Machine is the best album of 2005, but it got shafted for more popular artists. What a shame. If there is any justice, she will win her award.
J. Lo- acting: B+, singing: C
Mariah- singing: A, acting: F
So, I have to be on J. Lo’s team!
Where’s Kelly Clarkson’s nomination? I don’t get it. She should have at least one.
you know what? F the grammys! don’t get me wrong i’m a mimi fan and i like emmancipation-her best since butterfly, but is is not good enough to be in the album of the year race, and neither is gwen stefani! that cd is so average, i lets you know how much the rest of no doubt is crucial for them to make good music.
Every category screams if you sold copies you are in, when it should be about talent and the quality of the records not whether you were a billboard 200 staple. for that we have the american music awards and the very own billboards who ARE base on copies sold and popularity, the grammys should be about real quality, therefore crap wouldn’t get nominated.
BTW i hope Kanye west doesn’t win Sh*t so he can shut the hell up about how GREAT AND AWESOME he believes he is.
it’s a bout time that my girl is in the grammy’s and that she made a comeback and her Cd went #1 i knew it from the beginning and by the end of the year the her so don’t forget about us will hit the number 1 spot i think mariah derserves very bit fame in this whole year
mariah i love and i eould like to meet u and take every single gammy home u desereve them all
