Snap Judgment: Ashlee Simpson's "L.O.V.E."

151751__ashlee_lIn general, songs that include spelling out a word are insanely catchy (think John Cougar Mellencamp’s "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.," Tammy Wynette’s "D.I.V.O.R.C.E.," "there was a farmer who had a dog and Bingo was his name-o/B, I, N, G, O" — you get the idea).

Ashlee Simpson’s "L.O.V.E.", the video for which premieres on AOL Music today,  is no different. True, approximately 40 percent of the song’s lyrics are the letters L and O, but I’ll be damned it if I haven’t been humming it since lunchtime. The video, on the other hand, is not so memorable. Ashlee, fed up with her current beau, throws her cell phone in the toilet when he calls, and goes out with her girls instead. At some house party, she dances around with a cane left over from the Clockwork Orange prop trailer — and hipsters in various stages of undress. Apparently "[she’s] talking ’bout love." The crunchy hair doesn’t do her any favors, but the improbably low register of her voice (like she had a scotch-and-soda and a carton of Parliaments before the recording session) is somewhat compelling. But, please, someone tell her that making an L with your fingers sometimes means something else.

What did you think of the clip?

I hate myself for saying this, but I totally love the song. I strongly dislike Ashlee as an artist (she can’t sing and, as she proves in the L.O.V.E. video, CLEARLY can’t dance) but whoever wrote the song gets two snaps from me.

I am not a fan of Ashlee at all and this song certainly hasn’t won me over. In fact, everytime I hear Ashlee, it only reaffirms why I get my pop fix from UK artists. The only song on her album that is even listenable is Catch Me When I Fall.

I’m more surprised Ashlee can actually spell, but more alarming is EW endorsing “CRAP”… shame on you EW!!!

Didn’t care for the song or the video.

i’ve loved this song since i first bought the album!! i am a big fan of ashlee’s and wish that people would give her a break. ashlee can sing very well and has a lot of talent, im really happy for her. the L.O.V.E. video was alright….i would have done it a bit differently but whatever! being an artist means expressing yourself and thats what shes doing!

Are you kidding me? What’s Popwatch’s thing with Simpson anyway? One of the worst performers to reach stardom ever, and we continually have to read coverage of her every move here. Sheesh.

  • Thad

Why is this girl famous? She IS what’s wrong with music today and Popwatch just fuels the fire. Yuck to both.

H.A.T.E. this song. H.A.T.E. Ashlee. Why does PopWatch insist on endorsing this talentless twit? Enough already. Give us some real talent for a change.

Song is ok, though I too wonder how she ever got a record contract (yes, I know, her dad). But what is UP with her hair? White, with one side longer, Carol Brady-esque shaggy layers? Yikes.

  • SM

Why is EW reviewing this talentless twit? Please stop.
