Mariah vs. J. Lo: Whose team are you on?

Categories: Music

154356__mariahjlo_lFor most of this millennium, Jennifer Lopez (at right) had the upper hand in her eternal rivalry with fellow Tommy Mottola-groomed diva Mariah Carey (at left). That ended this year when Carey finally emerged from her post-Glitter slump with The Emancipation of Mimi, which sold 4.1 million copies, about six times as many as J. Lo’s March release Rebirth. (Mimi also earned Carey eight Grammy nods this morning, while Lopez didn’t earn any.) In fact, Carey’s album is the No. 2-selling CD of the year to date, surpassed only by 50 Cent’s The Massacre (4.8 million sold). Such are the details revealed in a music winners-and-losers article by Michael Endelman and Raymond Fiore in the forthcoming issue of EW.

So it’s time; pick a side — whose team are you on?

    neither, they both suck

  • Brad

Of course, Mariah…While I do like some of Jennifer’s songs, it still can’t beat Mariah’s vocals, comeback, and her pure talent. Rock on Mimi, can’t wait for what you have in store for us next!!

  • Jeric

I would definately side with Mariah.

  • Eric

Is that really a fair fight? That’s like asking if you like Kelly Clarkson or Justin Guarini better.. It is obviously Mariah and her 8 octave perfect pitch voice..

  • WA

MARIAH BABY!!! So proud of her,I love how grateful she seems through all of this success. You can see so much newfound inner beauty in her smile. GO TEAM MARIAH!!! Now all of you that are loving her these days don’t hate if a rough patch comes again, stand by your girl like I did!

    Is there a THIRD choice?

  • allison

Mariah all the way. J. Lo’s turned into tabloid fodder.

  • Bernard

Picking between J.Lo and Mariah Carey is like picking between arsenic and cyanide for a nightcap.

  • jason

mariah mariah mariah mariah mariah need i continue, have you heard j lo sing!?!

  • Jason Logan

    Mariah..simply a better singer

  • Dylan

Jennifer! Sure, mariah may have a stronger voice, but that doesn’t matter when you only use it for wretched, unimaginatively crappy songs. Plus she just seems like a dense bimbo. Jen has alot more going on in terms of acting and other business ventures.

  • Christina

Mariah. At least she has a talent

  • Larry

    Brad your mom sucks
    Mariah the real deal
    J Lo
    Not so much

  • Miles

i found the Emancipation CD unbearable. But I am sorta glad she climbed out the Glitter slump. It gives me hope that J.Lo will climb out of hers. But in terms of picking teams… I am gonna start my own… and going over to the Alicia Keys TEAM.

  • Mimi by a mile

Actually, TEOM was just certified 5X platinum and she is ahead of The Massacre. Also, with it being early December, I find it odd that they’ve already declared 50’s CD the best-seller already since the year isn’t over yet. And it’s ironic that The Massacre sold over a million copies it’s first week out, and Mimi only sold 400,000, and she’s still sold more than him in less time, and more than Kanye West as well, cause he sold double what she did his first week, and he’s only managed to move 2 million units so far. Kinda sad that a few years ago they were the big thing and Mariah was in career obscurity and now she’s selling more than then all the big rappers and younger artists, like Ciara and Beyonce, and getting triple the airplay and impressions that they had with their biggest hits. J.Lo’s has huge success but never come close to selling Mariah numbers so there’s really no comparison.

J-Lo’s career has gone cold just in a few years. The overexposure as a result of “Gigli” and “Bennifer” was just too much for people, and it hurt her career.
I believe Jennifer will bounce back but it will take some time. I still like her music. ‘Get It Right’ was one of the funkiest tracks of the year.

Neither. Madonna will always the hardest-working, most entertaining, physically active and athletic, most over-all creative and talented artist of all female singers. Madonna may not sing as well as the others but she surrounds herself with talented people and knows how to make good music and knows how to reinvent herself better than anyone else, and it shows by her managing to have her 36th Top 10 single (tied with Elvis). This is even more remarkable given that her current success is a dance record by a white artist in this era of R&B radio domination. Madonna’s success is made by sales from a loyal fanbase who has never lost interest. Mariah and J. Lo’s success is radio-friendly music for today’s radio market that caters to R&B. we’ll see where Mariah and J. Lo at age 47. I predict long forgotten alongside Whiteny and Celine, other talented voices whose music becomes boring and recycled. I am tired of Mariah’s hip hop beats. I’ll take Madonna over all of them!

I noticed that Jennifer Lopez hasn’t really been doing much since she got married to Marc Anthony, but maybe that’s just a coincidence. Her career wasn’t going that well before her marriage, anyway.

  • sin

J-Lo, Mariah tries desperately to be sexy when Jennifer is. Also I doubt anyone would buy Mariah’s perfume

  • lalo

Ugh! I am baffled by all the Mariah Carey grammy nods and success attributed to her this year. I really don’t believe in attacking celebrities, or people for that matter if you don’t even know them, but I just gotta vent for once. I truly hate that “we belong together” song that comes on the radio every two seconds, as well as all her other recent songs. Her voice and music is like nails on a chalkboard. I like the old school Mariah songs, which were actually catchy. I really think Benny Medina has a lot to do w/ her being number 1 all of a sudden. I’m sure his use of threats, influence, and bribes sure came in handy! Anyways, I think Lopez will be back. It’s obvious she’s made a conscious decision to not be “out there.” It might hurt her career for now, but not in the long run.

    J. Lo! Although I’ll take Kelly Clarkson over both of them. he deserved Grammy nominations for Since U Been Gone in Record & Song of the year categories.

    Um… let’s see… an insecure, embarassingly underdressed, loose-cannon of a ho-bag or a huge-caboosed, fur-wearing, no-talent, wife of an emaciated manorexic? Can’t decide.

  • Michelle

Okay Mariah has had breast implants, plastic surgery on her face, butt implants and she still has ZERO sexy appeal, J-Lo all the way!

  • Nina

Mariah has the better voice by FAR (my dog’s bark is more melodic than J. Lo’s supposed singing), but J. Lo has it on Mariah in the sex appeal category. She also has a lot going on business wise. I go with TEAM ALICIA, though!

  • Nina

Mariah’s comeback is to be respected, though.

  • Jay

No contest. Mariah all of the way. How can you compare a woman that’s had hits for over a decade to a woman that has shown that her music can’t last past five years? If you’re going to compare Mariah to anyone, it should be her actual peers (Celine, etc.), while J-Lo should be compared to the Britneys and Ashantis of the music industry.

  • PN

Mariah 4ever……when until she has her next nervous breakdown.

  • Ron M.

Neither,Mariah is talented but I can’t put her in the class of Aretha,Whitney,Chaka,Stephanie,Shanice. She’s
a good singer but any of these women I mentioned would blow her off that stage.
I’m not trying to be mean but the main reason she’s wildly popular is the fact she biracial. Sorry but that’s the truth. She maximized that fact and that’s why she’s selling more than her competition.

  • Jasmine

As much as i hate them both, i have to say Mariah. Despite her horrible song choice, she can sing with the best of them.
