Tribute: Wendie Jo Sperber

9438__wendie_lYou know Wendie Jo Sperber, who lost her battle with breast cancer Tuesday. She was Tom Hanks’ galpal on Bosom Buddies and Marty McFly’s sister in the Back to the Future series, and she popped up in a variety of guest spots on Will & Grace, Murphy Brown, and 8 Simple Rules. Her performances were characterized by her distinctive voice and acerbic delivery, but in life, she aimed for sincerity. After being diagnosed in 1997, she founded weSPARK, a cancer support center in Sherman Oaks, Calif. Hanks said in a statement: "The memory of Wendie Jo is that of a walking inspiration. She met the challenges of her illness with love, cheer, joy and altruism. We are going to miss her as surely as we are all better for knowing her." Amen, Hanks-y!

Oh my God! I remember when she used to chase after Peter Scolari in Bosom Buddies. So so sad. R.I.P.

  • Nick

Her hysterical delivery and love for Treat Williams in the underrated _1941_ was classic.

It was Tom Hanks she always chased after in Bosom Buddies, but he only had eyes for Donna Dixon. You can’t blame him really, but as a kid, I always thought his character was nuts for not returning her affection, she was cute and would treat him like a king.
This was really sad news, I feel like a part of my childhood is gone. She was only 10 years older than me, I hope when my time comes, I can face my mortality with the dignity, grace, and humor that Ms. Sperber did. R.I.P Wendie Jo, you have left a lot of great memories.

I had the great good fortune of knowing Wendie when we were both at Granada Hills High School in the 1970s and at the Teenage Drama Workshop at Cal State Northridge for several summers. She was my first on-stage kiss! She was then, and apparently remained, one of the sweetest, funniest and mischevious people on the planet…and, it turns out, one of the most courageous. Rest in peace, sweetheart.

OMG, I loved this girl, and her death saddens me. I all remember her on “Bachelor Party” punching her hunsband in a headlock saying “I SAID NO HOOKERS, HOOKERS, HOOKERS!” Gotta love her

How sad. My sister and I used to watch Bosom Buddies and I loved Wendie Jo Sperber. Does anyone else remember “I Want to Hold Your Hand” a sweet film about the Beatles appearance on Ed Sullivan and a bunch of kids’ struggle to get in to see it? I remeber her best in that movie. Very cute and funny.

From BOSOM BUDDIES and I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND to BACK TO THE FUTURE, MOVING VIOLATIONS and BACHELOR PARTY, Wendie Jo Sperber always made me laugh. I was saddened to hear of her death and she will be missed. This just proves that you don’t have to be the biggest star in the world in order to do good things in your life and have people care about you and miss you when you’re gone. Rest in peace, Wendie Jo. Can’t wait to meet you one day!

“Bosom Buddies” was the first show I remember watching every week and talking about with my friends at work the next day. It was so funny to watch Amy chase after Henry. Her delivery of her lines was so unique and special. My favorite performance of hers has to be “Bachelor Party”. It makes me laugh just to think about it. The last performance I saw of Wendi Jo Sperber’s was her guest starring part on “Will & Grace”. Again, she stole every scene she did. I will miss her.

Wendie will always be known as Amy. A life too short and a talent not showcased to the fullest.

i am late in expressing condolences because i did not know this news. wendi and i took acting classes together back in the mid-70s as teenagers. we had so much fun in our efforts to portray Moliere’s Comedy of Errors.
she was funny then; i’d seen her on TV on and off through the years…she was funny then too and beautiful as well.
i am participate in the Revlon RunWalk every year – to honor my mother who is a breast cancer survivor now 8 years; to honor those who have battled this illness; to honor those who lost their battle too.
this year, my participation will be more inspired than ever before as i remember a dear friend from long ago…wendi jo sperber.

This girl is hilarious! I wondered what she was doing these days. I thought of her after seeing some of the footage from hairspray.(maybe the young girl in hairspray was inspired by Wendie? She was in Grease w/ Travolta)I Didn’t know she was gone, until now….The funniest thing I remember from “I wanna hold your hand” was when she needed to make a phone call from a phonebooth, to win a radio contest & thrust a handful of dimes at the slot. I MISS HER! wHAT A BRAVE & BEAUTIFUL SOUL!
