A new 'Sound of Music'? What do you think?

162942__cdiaz_lOverheard (by my secret IM spyware) at PopWatch HQ:

Editor1 [3:53 P.M.]:
So, what’s up with Julie Andrews saying that Cameron Diaz (left) should play Maria in a Sound of Music remake? I just don’t see it.

Editor2 [3:55 P.M.]: Shouldn’t Maria be able to sing???

Editor1 [3:56 P.M.]: Right — and we know Cameron can’t sing from My Best Friend’s Wedding.

Editor2 [3:57 P.M.]: Is this because they were both in Shrek 2? I mean Julie did play her mother, so maybe this is nepotism!!

Editor1 [3:59 P.M.]: Hollywood is a big incestuous hotbed of non-singers!

Editor1 [3:59 P.M.]: How about Kate Beckinsale? Or Winona Ryder? I see this as Winona’s comeback movie.

Editor2 [4:00 P.M.]: How ’bout… nobody? Why even do a remake? I must admit, I saw The Sound of Music on Broadway and nothing will live up to the original movie.

Editor1 [4:00 P.M.]: Agreed. The original rocks! But still…

Editor1 [4:01 P.M.]: I’m seeing Haley Joel Osment as the Nazi boyfriend.

Editor2 [4:02 P.M.]: Oh! I think Haley got cute. Or was it was the kid from Jerry Maguire?

Editor2 [4:02 P.M.]: So, we’re in agreement. No remake?

Editor1 [4:02 P.M.]: No remake! Nobody could do it better than Julie Andrews. She rocked in that movie!

I’m seeing Hugh Jackman as the dad and one of the Olsens as Lisl von Trapp.

What do you think? Would you like to see a Sound of Music remake? And if so, who is your dream Maria?

No, no, no, no, no, and no! Has all the creative energy that Hollywood once held claim to been suddenly sucked away. Are the writers so untalented that they can’t think of a scenario for another original musical, so they need to remake one of the movies in history that absolutely doesn’t need to be remade? I don’t think so. This is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard of. What’s to stop these people from remaking classics such as “The Godfather”, “Casablanca”, “The Wizard of Oz”, or “On the Waterfront”? This is a travesty, and further proof that Hollywood has become nothing more than a business completely interested in making money. It’s really a shame.

NO REMAKE!!! NOT POSSIBLE TO COME CLOSE TO THE ORIGINAL, A CLASSIC…MY FAVORITE ALL TIME MOVIE! I LOVE JULIE ANDREWS, IN EVERYTHING!!!If we are just having fun with picking a possible cast, all of the suggestions sound great except for Cameron. I know this will be controversial but I gotta throw in my girl Christina Aguilera!

    Yeah….What he said too!

If they’re going to remake it (and that should NEVER EVER EVER happen), it would need to be someone who is/was a singer first like Joss Stone (who has a very different voice) or Mandy Moore.
I’m sure Brits have someone who can fit the description…

Don’t remake the classics. Hollywood is not through reimaging 70’s and 80’s sitcoms. Call Valerie Harper: Rhoda, the Next Generation.

The problem with doing a remake is a Catch 22. If it isn’t broke, as is the case with “The Sound of Music,” don’t fix it by filming an updated version. If it is broke, then why fix it, as it was a bad movie to begin with? An execption to this rule is the 2001 remake of “Ocean’s Eleven,” which I thought was far superior to the Rat Pack infested original. (I may get shot for saying that but it’s just my opinion.)

Okay, I don’t that the this movie should EVER be remade!! It certainly doesn’t seem to have worked in the past. And I know that Julie Andrews knows what she’s talking about, but Cameron Diaz?? Like pretty much everyone has pointed out, she can’t sing!! Let her do her own thing, but to play Maria?? I just don’t see it. Can anyone out there think why Julie Andrews would pick her?? It’s not that I don’t like Cameron Diaz, but a musical…really??

  • Bertie

PS….Good call on Hugh Jackman!! :)

I love the original, and I can see Cameron doing Maria. She’s got the happy personality for it. They can always get someone else to sing for her. I think they should keep Christopher Plummer as the dad, though. Fer sure.

The whole remake debate is silly. Plays are revived all the time and songs are rerecorded by different artists. Why should movies be different? In the cases of movies and songs, fans of the originals are in luck, since the original version is still available.
My two cents on whether they should do remakes is that they definitely should. The majority aren’t as good as the originals, but a few are superior, such as Ocean’s 11 and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

They should NEVER remake the SOM. That was one of Julie Andrews’ signature roles. No one could do it like she could.

the more i think about this, the more it seems like Cameron is an appropriate choice, from the standpoint of character accuracy… Maria needs to be absent-minded, somewhat innocent and childlike, yet capable of being womanly and motherly at the same time. i can KIND OF see where they got the cameron diaz idea, considering that. they should either go with an actress who already possesses maria’s characteristics, like cameron, or someone who can actually act, like nicole kidman (as much as she needs a vacation) or cate blanchett or gwyneth paltrow (not really naive enough). first and foremost, though, Maria needs to have an amazing voice… which makes cameron a very weird choice. i agree with the idea of choosing from a pool of singers rather than actresses… the christina aguilera idea is interesting, but more than a little scary… i think joss stone is WAY off though.
if someone absolutely HAS to remake the movie, what about–
Reese Witherspoon? Kirsten Dunst? Sarah Jessica Parker? Amy Sedaris? Rachel McAdams? Amy Adams?
    just thoughts…

By the time this actually hits the screen, Dakota Fanning will be playing Maria.

Remaking The Sound of Music is as bad as making a sequel to Titanic.

Never!!!!!! No reason to at all!
