Springsteen: Born to run for Senator?

Baby, this town rips the bones from your back. Bruce could have been singing about Washington, D.C., where Republican senators blocked a pro-forma resolution by New Jersey’s two Democratic senators that would have commended Springsteen on the 30th anniversary of the release of Born to Run. No reason was given for the snub, but it seems likely that the GOP senators are still steamed that the Boss campaigned actively for Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry last year.

Steve Cobble at The Huffington Post offers a novel idea for revenge: Soon-to-be former senator and N.J. governor-elect Jon Corzine should appoint Springsteen to fill his seat in the U.S. Senate. Not sure whether the increasingly political Boss would be interested, but he’s certainly be the hippest senator since Fred Dalton Thompson.

What say you, PopWatchers? Does Cobble have a good idea? Or should Bruce’s fans merely lobby the Senate to reconsider the Born to Run resolution?

I’m a big Springsteen fan, even if I don’t agree with his politics (which, BTW, on the last tour took up way too much of the concert time; another song would have been preferable). But is this really a matter that requires the attention of the US Senate? This pandering from Corzine (who just ran one of the most disgracefully negative campaigns this country has ever seen) and Lautenberg is about as cheap as a musician screaming “Hello !!” to get applause.

Having worked for Corzine when he was a Senator, I’d say he’s more likely to go with one of the more obvious choices. He’s mentioned a popular African American State Senator as one possibility, and Congressman Bob Menendez (who is Cuban American) has been supported by a lot of organizations and fellow members. Bruce is still a longshot, and it doesn’t help him that he’s a self admitted independent, even if he did endorse Kerry. My analysis? Not a chance Boss. Sorry.
