Academy picks documentaries -- any snubs?

154110__march_l_1The penguins are on the march, the wheelchair rugby players are rolling, and the kids are fox-trotting their way toward possible Academy Awards. Yes, the Academy has released the list of the 15 documentaries in the Oscar eligibility pool. Many audience favorites made it (like March of the Penguins, Murderball, and Mad Hot Ballroom). I’m just happy to see that the documentary category offers a real race, as it has for the past couple of years, among contenders that ordinary moviegoers have actually seen and care about. Still, I know you want to talk snubs — like, where are Grizzly Man, The Aristocrats, and The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill? Discuss.

I like how ‘Rize’ is on the list. I saw and loved ‘The Aristocrats’ but I cannot see that ever being nominated. BTW, where’s the token Holocaust doc?

It’s too bad The Aristocrats isn’t on the list. If it’d won, I would’ve given anything to have seen Sarah Silverman or Gilbert Gottfried go up on the stage and accept the Oscar on their behalf. “So this family goes to the Academy Awards – Mom, Dad, kids, Grandma, and the family dog…” The ABC censors would’ve gone mad!

Woah. Grizzly Man AND the Aristocrats got snubbed? That super sucks man. Both of them flicks were AMAZING, especially the tale of Timmy Treadwell and his disturbing mind that included some primo shots of bears in their natural environment. As for the aristocrats? I’ll never look at Sarah Silverman the same way again…

Ha ha…”The Aristocrats” was funny, but let’s face it, it wasn’t going to win an Academy Award. I really liked “March of the Penguins,” although “Winged Migration” was more…magical. My guess is “Murderball” or “Mad Hot Ballroom” will win, though.

That’s disappointing that “Wild Parrots” didn’t get nominated – I thought that was one of the most moving films of the year.

Winged Migration, was, like two years ago.

Yeah, Grizzly Man is a major sllight. Not just the year’s best doc, but one of the 2005’s best movies in general. But what do you expect? These are the same people who overlooked Hoop Dreams, Crumb, and Roger and Me.
