Movie Deals: De Niro, Carmen Electra, and Mandy Moore

9355__deniro_l-Stop the presses! Robert De Niro (left) has signed on for his next film role and — wait for it — he’s going to play a retired Mafia hitman with a price on his head in an adaptation of Don Winslow’s forthcoming novel The Winter of Frankie Machine, according to Variety.

-Apparently, all that acclaim Amy Adams received for her performance in this summer’s Junebug is translating into leading roles: She’s been cast as a princess in Disney’s Enchanted, a mix of live action and CG animation, in which her character is banished from a cartoon world and sent to modern-day Manhattan.

-I know it’s wrong that this bit of movie news excites me, but after getting hilariously killed off in the original Scary Movie, Carmen Electra is back on board for Scary Movie 4 (a spoof of The Village, according to the Hollywood Reporter). Also coming on board are Leslie Nielsen and Simon Rex.

-And somehow, Mandy Moore keeps getting movie roles. (I just don’t care for her; sorry "Candy" fans.) Variety reports that Moore will play the daughter of matchmaking-minded Diane Keaton in Because I Said So.

Anyone care to share their thoughts on the above casting news? Surely I’m not the only opinionated beast in the woods today, am I?

Hey, be careful what you say ’bout Many Moore. You’ve got to see her in Saved, which is a great spoof on how “religious” education can be less than accepting of those who do not truly believe! Best part is at the end when the 100 foot Jesus fall on top of Mandy and her van. It’s very campy and funny – yet spot on! Mandy shows off some serious comedy here.

De Niro in ANOTHER mafia role? Hasn’t he gotten tired of doing these? At least hes getting back to serious roles.

Whatever happened to actors stretching their chops? This will be, by my reckoning, Denior’s 6TH Mafia role (not including Casino, where he was also mobbed up). Revisiting old terrain does not facilitate growth in the craft. And what not. Bobby needs to do some Shakespeare in the Park. Maybe Lear, or something.

the Theater is better than rejeuvination.

I’ll admit to Mandy Moore movies being a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I stop every time Chasing Liberty is on HBO; it’s good fun. But DeNiro in another Mafia movie? Yikes. I agree with you all that a change of pace, perhaps for the rest of his career, may be a good idea.

How could you not like Mandy Moore? It’s like not liking puppies.

    Don’t call me Shirley!
(I assumed you were waiting for that. What with you asking us “Surely . . .” and Leslie Nielsen being one of the featured actors in the piece.
I’m a little disappointed no one got to it ahead of me.)

Hey now, DeNiro is not a one-dimensional mafia actor. He’s won Best Actor as a boxer in Raging Bull and has been nominated for Best Actor three other times for his roles in Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, and Awakenings. He can even play in comedies like Meet the Fockers.

I know it’s not my place to be criticizing the genius filmmakers behind ‘Scary Movie 4′, but spoofing ‘The Village’? Wouldn’t it make just a bit more sense to go after something people might have actually seen? It’s not like there haven’t been any hit horror movies for the last couple of years.

I agree that Mandy Moore was never the best singer, but I think she’s proven her chops as well as, if not better, than many actresses out there. She should stick to what she’s not terrible at, which is acting. I haven’t seen her in enough to defend any more than that. :p
