RIP: 'The Apprentice: Martha Stewart'

95129__martha_lOkay, it wasn’t a huge surprise that NBC would tell Martha Stewart she just doesn’t fit in. Ratings have been lackluster, even by the Apprentice franchise’s now-diminished standards. (The Donald’s version is drawing only 10 million viewers a week now, but Martha’s averages just 6.8 million.) Still, it seems baffling that, between Stewart, Trump, and producer Mark Burnett, they couldn’t figure out how to make this show into a hit. About the only thing to look forward to now is the two-hour live series finale on Dec. 21, not because we really care who wins, but because Martha live (or even semi-live, as on her morning show) is always a compelling view.

Could The Apprentice: Martha Stewart have been saved? What should its makers have done?

It’s a shame more people didn’t watch Martha’s verion of the Apprentice. There were certainly problems (including her daughter, who offered nothing as a “judge” and Martha, at times, being a little stiff on TV). But, where Trump is all ego and product placement, Martha actually develops tasks that showcase the creativity and business savvy (or lack thereof) of those trying to be her apprentice (and not just their ability to develop a marketing campaign for some new product that sponsors the show like with Trump).
Plus, she seems to care more about getting the right person than getting more ratings and I love when her prime and proper manner is lost during her unscripted moments of frustration.

I actually prefer Martha’s Apprentice to Donald’s. The tasks are much more interesting and the candidates in general seem more capable and less “eye-candy-ish” than Donald’s.
I think Martha’s show got prematurely panned and abandoned. EW didn’t even do a recap of it after the first couple of weeks.

Martha seems a little too ‘sweet’on the Apprentice. I was kinda hoping that she would be bitchy and ruthless in the boardroom but she’s gracious and calm. BORING! I think that’s why everyone has abandoned the show. Everyone was hoping for Martha the b*tch

I think they should’ve found a way to tie in Martha’s show with Prison Break while she was still in the slammer.

Let’s face it. The Donald KILLED Martha. There was no reason to run both Apprentice shows at once. If NBC and Donald had had any faith in Martha, they would have put her into Donald’s Thursday at 9 slot and then brought the Donald version back in the Spring.
The Martha Apprentice isn’t really any worse than the Donald Apprentice. Actually, it’s the same show. Same plot, same type of people, same type of tasks, etc.
If I were Martha, I’d be pissing mad at NBC and Trump.

I like Martha’s show. Airing it on Wednesday night killed it. My plea to NBC is to bring it back for the summer (instead of lame re-runs!!!)

If I were Martha, I would be mad too! I think people are tired of the whole Donald thing and they should have created something new and unique for Martha in prime time. Maybe CSI MARTHA?!! Peopel seem to watch any junk that says CSI in it’s title!!! It also was a tough time slot….nothing can compete (especially NBC!) with the hot ABC and especially LOST. Martha certainly has more talent than the Donald! I feel bad.

Ya know, I actually prefer The Martha to The Donald. Her business sense seems to be more in line with what most non-multimillionaire managers go through. It’s too bad that MB killed the Apprentice franchise by overdoing the series – too many bosses at once. They should’ve alternated them – Donald, then Martha, when who knows…

I prefer Martha to Donald as well. It’s really unfortunate that NBC and Mark Burnett didn’t put more thought into the show. It is basically the exact same show as Donald’s, and while I can understand the argument “if it aint broke…”, but in this case they missed the boat. They are working with a very creative business woman – almost the complete opposite of Donald – so why not use her skills to develop something a bit different? Pure laziness and greed are the only answers I can think of. It’s too bad – I really liked this show.

Martha’s Apprentice is smarter and subtler than Donald’s as she actually tries to analyze the outcomes, instead of just heckling the contestants (sorry, job candidates) like Donald. Two versions are never better than one when one is enough. Look at the CSIs. Did anyone need New York? In terms of ratings, it’s still CSI: Regular tops (28 M), then CSI: Barbeque (18 M), and finally, CSI: Dill Pickle (14.5 M). In fact, CSI: BBQ is 40% off of Regular flavour compared to Martha’s 30% off Donald’s. Still, considering both Apprentice shows have below-expected ratings, it’s time they took a break (or better yet, get higher quality candidates with less flat-out sales only commercial tasks). Martha should have been on her own this time, but I guess NBC just got too desperate.

Good riddance, now here’s NBC’s chance to pick up Arrested Development (and possibly Kitchen Confidential). Just think of the block: My Name Is Earl, Scrubs, The Office, Arrested Development. Must-See TV would finally be back

i enjoyed watching marthas apprentince more so then donalds.. but unfortunately for martha she started behind the 8 ball.. so many people were rooting for her to fail or expecting her to anyway…. oh well lifes not fair.

  • Bob

Maybe not airing it opposite of Lost would have helped.

As a TV personality Martha is a bore. What may (emphasis on MAY) work as Miss Homebody in one format has nothing to do with being in prime time trying to attract eye balls.
Does anyone think this show would have gotten on the air if martha DIDN’T have a prison record?
She’s almost as stiff on camera as the rest of the cast. This is the most scripted looking “reality” show yet.

Please people, two apprentice shows at the same time would not work ever. And Donalds, i happen to not watch anymore. They should have just let her be Martha. And she may be tight faced, but “SO WHAT, GET OVER IT”.
