What! No winner in Oct. 31's Box Office Bull's-eye?

I don’t want to sound like Chicken Little (who, by the way, topped the box office during the third installment of EW’s new prediction challenge), but what is the world coming to? More than 2,000 of the world’s most informed entertaiment fans (namely, you) entered and no one answered every question correctly.  Yikes — now that’s a tough game!

I should add that hundreds of you wisely put Chicken at the top of the coop, followed by Jarhead and Saw II. But the fill-in questions, where we ask you to predict the specific take for two movies, tripped up every single competitor. Alicia Kiehne, the week’s top player, was right about every multiple-choice question but her impressively close ticket sales predictions were off in both directions. (She guessed $45 million for Chicken Little‘s take, but it only went to $40 million. Her Jarhead estimate was $20 million, just below the actual $27.7 million.)

Surprisingly, the other major trip-up topic was Herbie: Fully Loaded. Out of the top four players, only Alicia correctly guessed that Herbie would sputter in at number four on the DVD sales chart. The other top players, Nick Tiernan, Mike LaFrankie, and Kelly Doll, each missed that question and two others. But they rose above the crowd by correctly answering five other questions, which in this week’s game is quite a feat.

What are we gonna do to encourage the quest for a perfect score? I’ll tell ya what. We’re gonna keep easing off until one of you hits it big. For starters, we’re eliminating one of the fill-in questions on next week’s game, and we’re rephrasing the DVD question to make it easier. If that doesn’t bring us at least one winner when all of you return on Monday to compete yet again for the $50 gift certificate, then all I can say is, "The sky is falling in! The sky is falling in!"

(By the way… many thanks to Bren, who pointed out a problem with the previous week’s game. NBC changed the TV schedule on us, airing Three Wishes instead of E-Ring on Friday, Oct. 28, during the time slot that we asked you to predict. As it happens, this wasn’t the deciding factor in the game — and NBC still won the time slot. However, it convinced us to tweak the format of our TV questions so we don’t get fooled again.)

Since you are doing a great job with the wrapup, can I offer a request? Can you post the top 20 or so for the week, to see where/if we place?
    Thanks for the fun game!

  • Michael Small, EW.com

Thanks, Gerald. That’s a great idea. We should have posted a list of top players from the start. Sorry about that. We’ll start posting a list next week.

I hate to nitpick, but AGAIN the answer for a movie’s box office take gives an incorrect answer BASED ON THE WORDING OF THE QUESTION: the correct answer for #5 SHOULD be 28, not 27.7; the answer is to the nearest million, not the actual take! And I agree with a Top 20 listing each week!
