I’m filled with self-loathing this morning, and I’ll tell you why. I’m one of those dullards who sets his cellphone to ‘vibrate.’ What does it say about me that I choose a low-wattage ”bzzz, bzzz, bzzz” over the plethora of hits at my disposal?
Maybe I’d be better off with Kanye West’s ”Gold Digger,” which currently sits atop Billboard’s Hot Ringtones chart. (It’s followed by the Black Eyed Peas’ ”My Humps,” Koji Kondo’s ”Super Mario Brothers Theme,” John Carpenter’s ”Halloween,” and Mariah Carey’s ”Shake It Off.”) Or I could go with something classic, like Lalo Schifrin’s ”Mission: Impossible,” which sits at No. 35 after 47 weeks on the chart. I dunno.
I clearly need some help, people. So let’s have it: What’s currently playing on your cellphone? In the unforgettable words of Paula Abdul, how ’bout some information pleeeeeeease?

I actually have “Happy Birthday” as my ring tone…..at least once a week someone who hears my phone says “Oh is today you’re birthday?” I come back with “Everyday is my birthday!!” 90% of the time I get a laugh, which is what I was going for!
I have “Toxic” by Britney Spears.
You cannot go wrong with the musical stylings of Def Leppard. I would have preferred “Let’s Get Rocked,” but settled for “Pour Some Sugar On Me” based on the available ringtones.
My friend has the 90210 theme song, and that one is also a keeper.
I’ve got the “Invader Zim” theme song. It’s not really a ringtone. I just transfered the MP3 to my phone. I love it! It’s loud (so I can hear it) and it makes me giggle every time I get a phone call.
“Beautiful Stranger,” by Madonna. Sometimes I would rather it be “Don’t Tell Me,” but I’m pretty happy with this one. It’s been my ringer for about a year, I guess, and is certainly better than my least-favorite tone out there: the old-time ringing phone. Grr.
London Calling by The Clash. Great intro, interestingly enough almost no one recognizes the song.
freebird by lynyrd skynyrd. it makes me chortle and gets me weird looks every time.
I was “Push It” by Salt ‘N Pepa for the longest time.. but when I got a new phone, it didn’t sound good.. so I moved over to “Since U Been Gone” by my favorite all time artist.. the amazing Ms. Kelly..
Billboard has a Hot Ringtones chart? Since when? How do they tabulate it? Based on sales from where. Seems ambiguous to me.
Personally, I hate ringtones that are based off popular songs. It’s just a mish-mash of corporate synergy and really not very creative.
Not to be a fuddy-duddy, but whatever happened to a phone that rings like a phone? If you have to have a song, why aren’t there more original compositions.
I’ve never sounded more like a 45 year-old in my life.
The Muppet Show for rings, Fraggle Rock for messages. Makes me smile whenever my phone rings.
I have the opening riff to “Sweet Child of Mine” (Guns n Roses). A friend of mine has the theme from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, which I always crack up at…
I have “Bleitzkrieg Bop” and I had it before the stupid commercial.
I have a cheap phone that doesn’t allow for ringtone downloads (I don’t think), but it does have a mini-composition program in it, letting you write your own very basic single tone melody to use as a ring tone. I have the slow, sad Lost theme (the one that was prominently featured in the “Boone dies” episode, soft piano over the montage of the islanders greeting the new baby and Shannon finding out about Boone’s death). Now THAT’S geeky!
“Peter gunn” plays whenever an unkown caller come on, ‘Last night”comes on whenever an ex girlfriend calls, and for everyone else, it’s the Pink Panther theme song.
Well, you have given me so much joy from popwatch. It keeps me sane throughout the day as I sit in my boring boring classes all week long. Goodbless Wireless internet! I can’t help but check popwatch dozens of times a day just to see what’s new.
Now I can help you. Do a Sydney Bristow and go with the classic Nokia ring tone or as I do, go with the Alias theme song. Your friend and co-workers will wonder if you too are recieving too secret government assignment from Joey’s Pizza and nothing is cooler than that!
In honor of Arrested Development, find the song that Gob uses for his magic shows. That would be a great ringtone!
Law & Order theme for my parents, Hey Mama for my sister, and Drop it Like its Hot for my brother. For everyone else, it is just a normal rotary phone ring.
“Wonderboy” announces my nephew, whose interests are as geeky as my own.
The intro to AC/DC’s “Back in Black”
After spending hours trying to figure out which ringtone really spoke to who I was as a human being, I ended up with “Inspector Gadget Theme Song” and now…i’m the coolest kid in the office.
My ringer is The Way You Make Me Feel-old school Michael gets a smile out of just about anyone…and it’s the only one loud enough that I can hear it…
THE INTRO TO RAINING BLOOD BY SLAYER
Oh I think vibrate is the *best* ringtone…
The “A-Team” theme song. Makes me feel like I am coming to the rescue of anyone who calls-usually my husband asking me, “honey, how do I…. or “where is the….”.
It works for me!
Who ARE these people that have pop songs for ringtones?!? Every week when I read Billboard, I seriously find it hard to believe that the majority of people purchasing ringtones are buying “Gold Digger” and “We Belong Together”. Blech.
If I ever heard someone with one of those ringtones (keeping in mind that I HAVEN’T), I think I would yak on the spot. (I have a fun Euro trance song as my ringtone. No one here in the U.S. recognizes it, though, so I feel like it’s not horrific.)
Clearly, the people that put “Gold Digger” and “My Humps” at the top of the Ringtones Chart are the same people that have Nielsen boxes. (I know this is the wrong section to post this, but I just THAT sad about “Arrested Development”.)
P.S. Michael Slezak, how cute are YOU?
I have the theme to the O.C. I like watching to see who recognizes it. Such a guilty pleasure!
Am I the only person who listens to classical music? My ringtone is Beethoven’s “Song of Joy” from the Ninth Symphony.
I’m somewhat cliche… I have the Sex and the City theme for general callers. But I have the Ren and Stimpy theme assigned to people who annoy me, Madonna’s Get Into The Groove for my best friends, and LL Cool J’s Rock The Bells for my boyfriend.
“Ring Ring Ring Goes The Telephone….”
Madonna’s “Hung Up”!
When a memebr of my family calls, my phone will play “We Are Family” Pointer Sister’s.
When a buddy of mine calls, “Ghostbuster’s Theme”
When it is a random person that I may be familiar with but hardly ever talk and I am required to view the caller ID to decide whether or not I should answer, “Who Could It Be Now?” by Men at work.
If a lady calls “Brickhouse”
Oh yeah, I deserve an award here.
