The top 50 movie stars of all time

91554__grant_lHere’s another list to spark dorm-room arguments: Premiere magazine’s countdown of the Top 50 Movie Stars of All Time. I won’t challenge Cary Grant as No. 1 and Marilyn as No. 2, though I think it’s still too soon to put Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts in the top 10. (Bigger icons than Bogart at No. 13?) Also, are there no African-American women stars in the top 50? No Whoopi? And no stars from foreign cinema? No Jackie Chan, or Jean-Paul Belmondo, or Sophia Loren? Whatev.

Argue away, PopWatchers.

Yeah, I saw the list, whoever compiled it, doesn’t know crap about film. Now of course, the list didn’t say 50 Greatest Actors, it said Movie Stars, there is a differance. But come one, Tom Cruise is number 3 and Jack and Redford didn’t even make it in the top 10?
It’s almost as if they had put the names of all the actors into a bowl and picked them out at random. Now some might say that Jack isn’t much of a Movie Star because he stays out of the spot light, but its because he stays out of the spot light that the public has much more of a craving to see him. You don’t see Tom Cruise getting a front row seat to the Oscars, do you? As for Redford, one word- Sundance.
Well, I doubt many people will read this, but if anyone does, I hope they see this point of view.

After reviewing the list, I have to say I disagree with some of the choices, particularly the younger actors and actresses. They don’t belong there; they haven’t earned it.

MARLON BRANDO AT NO. 15! PLEASE! That man deserves to be at the very least in the top 10. Why? ON THE WATERFRONT, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE and THE GODFATHER.

Cary Grant #1, hell yeah. His body of work, status, charm and amazing good looks stand the test of time. It was either him or Bogart. But, Tom “I’ve personally, personally got people of drugs” Crusie at #3, give me a frickin’ break. Are the editors at Premiere smoking something? Julia Roberts is a good actress, America’s Sweetheart and all of that, but would you or anyone put her work up against Audrey Hepburn? HOW IS AUDREY NOT IN THE TOP TEN? Ask any modern day actress whose career/personal style/ icon status they would want? 19 times out of 20 it’s Audrey’s.
These lists are so silly. The magazines purposely throw some questionable actor/actress in there so people like us will have conversations where we start sentences like this, “Have you seen the Premiere top 50 list?” We keep their magazine alive, viable and cause others to buy/read/view the stupid article.
There will never be a list that pleases everyone, so just keep your own personal list and know with confidence that yours is clearly better than any magazines. No offense, EW.

This list is at least six months old. It came out when Cruise was promoting “War of the Worlds”, but before he became better known as a psychotic, anti-psychiatric father-to-be. Why are you just talking about it now?

Both Hepburns, Bette Davis, Fred Astaire, Grace Kelly, Paul Newman, Marlon Brando – basically all the stars from 4-25 rank lower than TOM CRUISE??? TOM CRUISE?? Not only is he barely a little better than a mediocre actor, but his media buzz has been enough to cloud his talent which is still bearable at best. I guess there’s a clear difference between movie-star and actor.

Tom Cruise in the top 10. When I think of all the outstanding performers out there, I’m not certain I would even put him in the top 50. I would put Dakota Fanning on the list before Tom Cruise.

What a minute! Tom Cruise #3? Are they crazy? Have they ever seen his films back-to-back? I have and I realized
that he’s never grown as a actor. The same with Julia Roberts. Not that they’re terrible but they don’t seem to challenge themselves either. And what’s with Marlon Brando at #15? No Jack or Audrey or Bette in the top ten? What are the people at Premiere smoking?

  • Faris

sophia lauren is on the top 50????? whoever picked those top actors are retards

I definitely agree with Cary Grant at #1. Most of the others I agree with the listing though not necessarily the ranking. Why is Elizabeth Taylor so low? As a movie star (not actress), she surely rates way up there. And as much as I love Ingrid Bergman as an actress, I don’t think I’d put her up there at #5 as a movie star. Nicole Kidman does not belong, Will Smith in a decade or two. Brad Pitt should be higher than #50 as a movie star.
Who’d they leave out? Well, Mary Pickford, GLoria Swanson, Douglas Fairbanks, etc. from the silent era. John Barrymore, Gene Kelly, Ginger Rogers, Faye Dunaway.
The omission of William Holden, however, is just criminal. STALAG 17, SABRINA, TEH COUNTRY GIRL, and of course, SUNSET BOULEVARD.

    they forgot…
    Mel Gibson
    Richard Burton
    Charleton Heston

  • Laura

Where’s Anthony Hopkins? And I’m shocked they put Will Smith on there. He’s good, but top 50? And what about Julie Andrews?

  • Laura

    Whoopi? Um, no.

  • Mike D

    Did I miss
    Joan Crawford
    Jodie Foster
    Dustin Haufman
    Steve Martin
    Eddie Murphy

  • Matt47

The fact that Tom Cruise is higher up than Katharine Hepburn, Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, Bette Davis, Tom Hanks (#30?!?!), etc. is shocking. They missed:
    ~Julie Andrews
    ~Lon Chaney
    ~Gene Kelly
    ~Ginger Rogers
    ~William Holden
    ~Samuel L. Jackson
    ~Barbra Streisand
    ~Dustin Hoffman
    ~Richard Burton
    ~Gene Hackman
    ~Whoopi Goldberg
The list goes on and on….
