“He doesn’t trust me… why doesn’t Master Kenobe trust me…”
Lucas has an imagination, I just wish he would have let some one else direct his movies… and write a better character driven story… thats all LOTR was and KONG will be… not that Jackson wrote either… but he definately understands that that is the most important part of storytelling… and minatures or not who cares, when it comes to a good movie it’s all about the story.
Here’s to hoping fame and fortune don’t turn Jackson into someone as blind and self-serving as Lucas. The “So, what?” attitude of Jackson’s crew sums it up perfectly. You can have the most amazing special effects ever, CGI or miniatures, but without compelling storytelling and characters you care about (either to love or hate) the movie will never be anything more than ordinary.
The frustrating thing with Lucas is that he had a truly great story and all the resources to turn that story into a truly great series of movies but somewhere along the line he began to care more about showing off his great special effects than he did his story. What a loss.
Until he graps that very simple idea he’ll never return to being one of the greats like Jackson (or James Cameron, Stephen Spielberg, Ridley Scott…need I go on) regardless of who does what at the box office.
If it’s a matter of “outperforming”…
Top 10 Worldwide Grosses of All Time (source: Box Office Mojo)
1.) Titanic $1.845 billion
2.) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King $1.119 billion
3.) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone $976.5 million
4.) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers $926.3 million
5.) Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Plotline $924.3 million
6.) Shrek 2 $920.7 million
7.) Jurassic Park $914.7 million
8.) Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets $876.7 million
9.) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring $871.4 million
10.) Finding Nemo $864.6 million
Seeing how Lord of the Rings have outperformed the Star Wars prequels, it’s pretty obvious this debate is pointless. GO JACKSON!!!
underpants, I was referring to domestic grosses, not international. Besides, if you adjust the international list for inflation, Episode I and Episode IV are still higher than any LOTR movie.
Anyway, as well all know now, King Kong limped to $200 million, came no where near any SW film, and is now considered a box-office disappointment.
Ha-ha!
