Trailer Blazer: Spielberg's 'Munich'

9231__munich_lThe trailer for Munich, Steven Spielberg’s shrouded-in-mystery Oscar contender, is online now at the film’s website. If you didn’t already know the story of the 1972 massacre of Israeli Olympic athletes by a Palestinian terror group called Black September, you’re not going to grasp much more of it from this clip, although it starts with a montage of archival news footage. You may grasp even less about the film’s plot, which centers on a shadowy group of Israeli government agents (including Troy‘s Eric Bana and future 007 Daniel Craig) who track down the Black September members and target them for assassination, but who apparently come to fear that they’re wreaking the same kind of indiscriminate havoc that they’re fighting against. The key moment in the trailer is the line spoken by a character who appears to be then-Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir; she says, ”Every civilization finds it necessary to negotiate compromises with its own values.”

Read into that what you will about America’s current anti-terror tactics. I can’t tell from the trailer whether Munich will be well-done and thought-provoking or heavy-handed and preachy.

What say you, PopWatchers?

    Perhaps heavy-handed but thought-provoking?

Didn’t they already make a movie about this some 20 years ago? It’s on Encore all the time.
Eric Bana. Dude owes me $16 for Troy and the Hulk (which made me mad in the wrong way).

Yeah, they did do this once before– It’s called “Sword of Gideon”. I used to like it… it was an HBO film, way back in eighties. You should get a prize for remembering it!

Cant wait to see it. Spielberg is the best director around, no discussion about it, and no matter what he does, I’ll be there to watch his movies. Eric Bana I think is great too, though Hulk could’ve been better, I still liked it and thought he played it great.

I thought it looked great, personally. Better than I expected, at any rate.
