Weekend To-Do List: Voter Registration Edition

15558__jar_lKnowing that every regular PopWatcher is registered to vote, and has plans to turn out at the polls this coming Tuesday (don’t make me come over there and tell you that’s Election Day, Blanche!), let’s all do our civic duty this weekend by partaking in some politically charged entertainment.

-Opening this weekend (and scoring a B+ from EW) is Jarhead, which stars  Jake Gyllenhaal (left), Jamie Foxx, and Peter Sarsgaard. It ”isn’t overtly political,” writes our own Owen Gleiberman, ”yet by evoking the almost surreal futility of men whose lust for victory through action is dashed, at every turn, by the tactics, terrain, and morality of the war they’re in, it sets up a powerfully resonant echo of the one we’re in today.”

-Bill Maher, meanwhile, may be declaring he’s Swiss, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t verrrry political. Or pretty funny, for that matter.

-What’s my favorite all-time Election Day anthem? Why, Deee-Lite’s short but groovy ”Vote, Baby, Vote,” from 1992′s Infinity Within, of course!

-While you’re surfing the net, take a minute to help the Council for Excellence in Government figure out who’s the best government-themed employee on TV today, and while you’re at it, give ‘em your pick for fictional president. (Hey! How come Oprah’s not on the ballot?)

-And on the subject of voting, weigh in on which Lost character should be touched by an angel next Wednesday — an angel of death, that is.

-Finally, on Sunday, check out The West Wing‘s live debate between candidates Arnold Vinick (Alan Alda) and Matthew Santos (Jimmy Smits). (And don’t forget to read our minute-by-minute blogging about it Monday mornin’). (NBC, 8 p.m. EDT).

Alright EW! Too bad the only big elections are in New Jersey and Virginia this year, otherwise the GOP would be taking a serious AW next Tuesday.
Still, if you live in VA. or NJ, PLEASE go out and vote for a governor tuesday, no matter which candidate you support :)

I live in Cleveland – which if you pull the election lever, comes up nothing but lemons.
We have a mayor, Jane Campbell, who dresses like Edith Bunker and has been endorsed by Dennis “The Phantom” Kucinich “Menace” (There’s the kiss o’ death!!!).
    “Oh, Archieeeee!”
But we do have The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (or, as you New Yorkers like to refer to it: U-Store-It).
But other than that, our great town has recently flatlined harder than a current episode of “ER.”
Oh, yes, we do have have Harvey Pekar as well – and my first “job in journalism” involved changing his adult diaper. So, I’ve got THAT going for me!
But other than that, everything else here in Cleveland is swell! (Well, I mean, other than Drew Carey’s “Green Room” – Le Groan).

Michael Slezak, I love you. You totally just name dropped Deee-Lite. And something besides Groove is in the Heart to boot. As a one-time member of their fan club (what.. I was only 13 at the time) I thank you.

Uhh, I’m a regular PopWatcher and I’m not registered to vote. I’m 17.

If you live in Jersey, be sure to cover your nose as you pull the lever as that is the smelliest mudbath/ excuse for a race I’ve ever seen in my 34 years on this planet. And: Santos is gonna eat Vinick’s lunch!
