Snap Judgment: Neil Diamond's '12 Songs'

9262__neil_lNeil Diamond: He’s not just for middle-aged women and Gen-X ironists anymore. 12 Songs, his new album, is mostly acoustic balladry in the same haunted, austere atmosphere producer Rick Rubin gave to Johnny Cash’s last CDs. Aside from the I-did-it-my-way sentiment of ”Hell Yeah,” it’s not an old man’s album, just more of the same from a guy who’s been writing effortlessly sad pop songs for 40 years. (By the way, my math skills are rusty, but I counted 14 songs, including a bonus track, a second version of ”Delirious Love” that’s a pretty wonderful duet with Brian Wilson.) In anticipation of the Nov. 8 release date, Columbia is streaming the whole disc at MySpace, another sign that someone knows what they’re doing here.

    I can’t wait for this album, and I’m neither a middle-aged woman nor a Gen-x ironist.

A return to form from the man who wrote
    Solitary Man
    Kentucky Woman
    I am I said
    Brother Love
    Cherry Cherry
    Etc, etc, etc.
    I can’t wait.
P.S. I am not a 40 year old woman but do enjoy a bit of irony.

I bought the new(about time) album right after it came out and heard it on the road. I am a 45 year old man who has been a fan for the past 27 years and seen him in concert twice. I am glad he doesn’t want to retire. I think he should release the long version of the “Delerious Love” as a pop single. It has the potential to be a mainstream hit because of the beat and words too! Keep on rocking and cooning!!!!!!!!!

Been meaning to buy this for awhile. I agree, the Delirious love version with Brian Wilson could totally be a mainstream hit. This is a very solid album. I’m 32 and been a fan as long as I can remember.
