Adios, Howard; Hello, Diamond Dave

Categories: Deals

145132__ad_lWho’s big enough to replace Howard Stern? No single person. Infinity has confirmed what has long been rumored: when the King of All Media leaves the syndicator for Sirius satellite radio at the end of the year, Infinity is replacing Stern with David Lee Roth (near left) in Eastern markets, Adam Carolla in the West (far left), and other lesser-known morning-zoo personalities elsewhere.

Anyone plan to listen to these guys instead of Howard, especially since they’ll be free? Or does the prospect of an uncensored Howard, who’ll be free to broadcast guests having live sex on the air, make you want to pony up $13 a month?

Terrestrial radio is a thing of the past, and shock jocks like Stern should go the way of the dinosaur, not future. Sirius will be out of business due to this Stern debacle, and XM will pick up the pieces (and hopefully get rid of their own Stern-idiots, Opie and Anthony at some point).

  • A2K

I think Stern’s schtick is pretty worn out, but if enough people follow him to satellite radio, Sirius and Stern will be the ones laughing (all the way to the bank). I won’t be making the trip though.

  • Terrell

Howard Stearn??? Spare me please that man disgusts me and I am tired of him. I would never pay to hear his disgusting show, I might on the other hand pay for him to shut his trap. The two replacements should be interesting, I’m glad that I live on the west coast because Adam Carolla seems much more appealing than david lee roth, although I’m sure both will do just fine.

Stern needs to leave the public airways. It is good entertainment for after 9pm. It is too hardcore for a child to listen to during the day. The fact that it played during the day gave the FCC the right to fine Howard for his perverted talk.
I wish Howard all the best.

  • Mandy

All Howard Stern does is whine and cry about how much he hates everything and everyone. I am tired of hearing his voice on the radio in the mornings, the routines are getting archaic. He complains about how miserably he is treated, how no one deserves him and that how without him the whole radio world is going under. It is pathetic.
No one wants to hear him anymore, it is old, stale and bitter.

  • DCM

Easy Choice…..pay the $$ and follow Howard to Sirius. His numbers speak for themselves and Sirius will continue to shape the new world of Radio. All of the negative feedback has to remember one thing and that is you can always change the channel. I will say that Adam will do very well on Radio, but the former Van Halen front man? No way jose! I can’t wait for January to hear Howard’s Show in the new un-censored format.

  • ecc

Stern will be successful on satellite but his terrestrial replacements will not. The appeal of satellite is not even so much that Stern will be uncensored, but that he will be without the 20 minutes of commercials per hour of broadcast. Stern invented the style of radio his replacemnents will be doing and they will be hard pressed to fill four hours, much less fill Stern’s shoes.

The Mighty Stern will make the imitators and detractors pay for their insolence.

  • Toni McFall

Howard Stern Rules !! Hell no, I won’t listen to these lame station who did nothing to combat the whinning censors at the FCC. I personally hope ground based radio goes broke. When it does, we can blame the FCC and the small minority that favor censorship over turing the dial to another staion or simply turning the radio off.

  • HowieRules

To all the detractors. Heard it all before. Its really quite simple. If you don’t like him, turn it off. Get it? Need some proof of his power and enduring popularity? Take a look at the the numbers for the fearchannel stations that dropped him a couple of years ago. They went from 1 or 2 in the market to near the bottom and stayed there. Check fearchannels stock prices and outlook since. Check infinities as well as the reports on the millions they’re trying to replace. Check reports on the recent (since the announcement) growth of ehehehhh vs. xm. Then come back and wine some more, or better yet don’t.

I love the comment by Mandy: “The fact that it played during the day gave the FCC the right to fine Howard for his perverted talk.”
I have a 7 year old daughter. I am an avid Stern fan. She has never heard the show. Maybe that’s because…well…um…I’M A GOOD PARENT! I know what my child is watching and listening to!
If Howard’s schtick is old and over-rated, then why is he #1 in all the major markets? The market dictates social acceptability. If he wasn’t acceptable to society nobody would listen.
Terrestrial radio signed its own death warrant by cowing to the FCC. Howard just helped pound the final nail into the coffin. Satellite radio will be uninhibited and POPULAR. Intelligent people do not want the government telling them what acceptable entertainment is.

  • Dan

A few are ruining it for the majority. Politicians/fake religious people/parents should tune out when offended or uninterested. Stern tells people to tune out when you’re not interested/offended & I do occasionally. I’m going to satillite, yes, because of Stern but more importantly radio today has turned so incredibly bad. We need to turn back to the days when radio was run by independant creative people, mega corporations have killed radio.

  • CB

I agre, its just like anything else, if you dont like it dont listen, if you dont like it dont watch, etc. DOnt try to press your “morals” onto everyone else. I like HOward, he tells it like it is as everyone should. WHat happened to freedom of speech? Its gone down the toilet with the rest of FM RADIO!!! SIRIUS HERE WE COME!!!

  • riffraff

Once Howard is gone from terrestrial radio there will be no reason at all to listen to it ever again. Satelite radio costs around 42 cents a day. It is the same comparison as cable vs. network tv. How many people do you know do not have either cable or satelite tv ? Hardly any i’m sure. Sirius is going to stomp XM into the ground after this move and terrestrial radio is finished. Thank GOD for Howard Stern. He is one of the last true American Heroes left in this country. While everyone else runs and hides from the goverment and religious right of this country he stands up for the rites of us average citizens. Thanks Howard !

  • jscoach

There are tons of radio stations that I do not listen to. I do listen to Howard Stern. My choice. What ever happened to that idea of choosing? I will pay to hear what happens on Sirius Radio and I will listen to that new format for mostly all other radio when I am not listening to Howard. Remember cable? most of us have it now…

  • kingwart

To all those who are saying that satellite radio will overtake terrestial radio – I understand your point. However – Yes, we all have cable…but we also have the local, basic cable broadcasts. These are the most watched channels. It’s not because we don’t have a choice, it is because they are easy for a majority of people, and they are free with antenna. The same issue faces satellite radio. It is not free, so we will end up with people having both. People will always need local radio if they want to hear local news or weather in thier cars. Does satellite offer that? Perhaps in some large markets, but I am sure not all. It is also easier to have terrestial radio, it is free and ingrained on our minds, our cars and our radios. People will not give that up anytime soon. BTW, I think radio is bad, and I hardly ever listen, but it does comfort me to know I have something to listen to if I run out of cd’s.

  • Sammy Cabo Wabo

Sirius bites. Tried it. Hated the endless self promotion in place of commercials. And, I won’t reup just for Howard.
The idiots at infinity decided Phoenix would rather have Carolla instead of Diamond Dave. WTF? Sick, heartless b*******s. If Sirius figured out how to carry regional stations (like one that carried DLR) I MIGHT rethink it.

  • lefty

Stern has changed the way radio will work, and all you folks out there saying it won’t, the train just left the station, and you missed the bell. If you hate him, don’t listen to him, but who won’t plop down what equals out to a pack of gum per day to hear what he has planned next?
Diamond Dave was great when he was singing “Panama” and “Ice Cream Man”, but come on, is there anyone out there that can replace Howard.
Best wishes to the king, and this from a Conservative. Freedom is great, isn’t it?

  • americanscantgrouptogether

Yes, I listen to Stern, but I’m not paying for him to get richer. Yes we all pay for cable, but how much more do we pay for additional channels, i.e. HBO, Playboy, to really watch what they offer that includes mature langue and scenes. Satellite like cable will be controlled one day. What Sirius and Howard are counting on is that once you make the switch and pay, you will then pay a premium to really hear what he’s got to say. The government gets into everything. Cable started this way, and Satellite radio will follow. Think and stand up for yourself. Howard does things for himself, not for YOU or any one else.

  • jack

I don’t think David Lee Roth will last. Part of his brain is missing; everytime he opens his mouth, he makes no sense!

  • MIF

Carolla just isn’t funny. Even Carolla himself has started to admit that his Comedy Channel show is unbelievably boring.

  • fas

I, like the majority who dont like stern, just dont listen to him. I am not a conservative, just i dont care for hours of whining, and find him a bit sad and outdated. I think he has a right to be on the air waves, and people who don’t like him should just tune out, then maybe he would have something better to say then ’sob sob sob and cry cry cry, they are taking away my 20 million dollar a year job’. Personally i am happy i will get diamond dave as a replacement, maybe he will be about as perverse as stern, and less of a cry baby. And no, i would never ever pay to listen to stern, if its free, well then he is ok for a couple of minutes at a time. And spare me that he stands up for all our rights, please, guys get a life, if i made that much for being a potty mouth, i would definately be fighting for my right to be a potty mouth. Seems like the vast majority of stern listeners (not all) are just suckered into his hoopla.

  • Steve

Most of the people on here who are bashing satellite seem to not even know the first thing about it anyway. First of all, the 12.95 a month you pay isn’t just for Howard. You get about 150 other stations, too, including all genres of music and all areas of talk. So for you right-wing, conservative, bible-thumping lunatics, there’s Christian Rock stations. You can listen to Stryper all day. If Howard is so old, archaic, outdated, and bitter, why is he still destroying everyone in the ratings? Satellite radio rocks and the only time I listen to terrestrial radio is when Howard is on in the morning. Come January 3rd, I’ll never listen to it again.

  • Tiff

Um, “americanscantgrouptogether”. The FCC doesn’t control what the cable stations do. The cable station owners, “follow” the rules of the FCC, sort of. They found that people will watch their stations more if they toned it down a bit. It’s not the government that controls them, it’s the money.

  • dma

I don’t care who replaces Stern, I care about losing a rock station to a talk station @ 92.3 K-ROCK in New York. That’s more upsetting to me. If I want a talk station, I’ll tune to AM radio. I want to rock dammit.
