-The Producers (Dec. 16) Having been translated from a movie into a stage musical and back into a movie, The Producers has, from the looks of the trailer, the appearance of leftovers microwaved once too often. The scenes look like the same exact shots from the 1968 movie, only without the manic energy that Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder brought to the lead roles. Where’s the visual inventiveness that Susan Stroman, director of the new film, brought to her Tony-winning stage production? Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, too, seem to have been replaced by lookalike understudies. Uma Thurman shakes some serious booty as Swedish import Ulla, but I’m not convinced yet that she can sing. Please, please let this be better than the trailer makes it look.
-The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (Dec. 9) This looks like pretty much everything you could ask for from a live-action adaptation of the C.S. Lewis kid-lit classic. It’s a little unsettling to hear the voice of Liam Neeson emanating from a lion’s mouth (or that of Ray ”Sexy Beast” Winstone coming from a beaver, above), but the effects look up to WETA’s standards, especially the battle sequences, which look very Lord of the Rings. Count me in.
-Memoirs of a Geisha (Dec. 9) The new high-definition trailer for this film is impossibly gorgeous, with a painterly quality to it. Whether or not the story, which looks like glossy melodrama, is any good, the film will be lovely to look at, not least because of Ziyi Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, and Gong Li. Can’t wait.

How perfect is casting Tilda Swinson as “The White Queen”? They should have an Oscar — albeit delivered with the techie Oscars w/o the glamour — just for casting.
Isn’t it strange for a movie taking place in Japan to have so little Japanese actors? I guess Ken Watanabe is one.
I thought that The Producers trailer was a little limp as well…but I’m still going to be first in line to see it. I was lucky enough to see Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane in The Producers on Broadway, and almost hurt myself with laughter. Those guys have got GREAT chemistry together- it’s really something special, and I’m sure it will translate well to the screen. Plus Uma Thurman and Will Ferrell? Count me SO in.
I don’t know… I usually like fantasy films (LOTR, original Star Wars, etc.) but this new trailer for Narnia just isn’t lighting my fire. The teaser was pretty good, but there’s something inherently silly to me about CG animals talking – especially when they have really recognizable voices, like Liam Neeson. And I have to say the colors and cinemetography for this movie just seem kinda… boring and bland. Especially the daylight/battle scenes, which look like computer simulated, video-game type sky. I don’t know… jury’s still out for me on this one.
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe looks unbefreakinglievable! I can’t wait for it! I grew up watching first the cutesy cartoon version, and then the cheesy low budget BBC version. I think this movie could be really great with some real Hollywood money behind it!
As much as I love musicals, I’m just not very excited about the movies coming out, such as the producers and rent. I’m guessing it’s also hard to do a good trailer for it, and that’s a big part of it.
memiors of a geisha, I haven’t read the book, but it looks like it could be good. I think Ziyi Zhang will make me think twice about seeing it, since she always plays the same exact character, or at least acts them in the exact same way. I’m pretty tired of her and her lame movies.
I think The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe looks great. I was really happy when they relelased the new trailer. Take your kids to see it, and buy them the books!!!
