Coming soon to The Netherlands: Televised heroin use!

If you thought Being Bobby Brown was proof positive of the decline of Western civilization, just be glad you’re not living in Europe.

Hot on the heels of the sperm-donor drama I Want Your Child And Nothing Else!, and a Big Brother-style program involving the slaughter of innocent goats, comes a new Dutch talk show called Spuiten & Slikken (Shoot Up and Swallow). Roving reporter Filemon Wesselink plans to smoke heroin, take LSD (under his mom’s supervision), and even get trashed on a pub crawl (how quaint!) for taped segments of the program, which will look at drug use and abuse across the country.

Do you see a day when a show like this could hit U.S. airwaves? Or does it simply cross a line that Americans won’t tolerate? Then again, if six episodes of Britney & Kevin: Chaotic didn’t raise your hackles, what exactly would it take for you to just say no?

… And this persuades me to stay home and watch how, exactly?

after nipple-gate do you seriously believe they’d allow that? and even if they did, that’s sooooo not watchable.

    Killing goats? How awful. :(

Wow, and I though Real World: Las Vegas was bad. Seriously though, this is a little extreme. It’s one thing to do a documentary (like I’ve seen before on HBO), but to make a reality show that you have to tune in every week to watch, that’s just wrong.

The Netherlands tv stations should do a reality tv show about life in a coffeeshop if they want to highlight the country’s drug use. For one, the clientele and the people selling are pretty likely to stay alive and Overdose free for the run of the series. With Heroin, what happens if the reporter OD’s his first time? Also, the camera crew might get mugged by junkies and we’ll probably never get to see the lost footage of them selling it at the pawn shop. Sounds like a bad show idea to me.

I think that the decline of western civilization is even further heralded by half-wit reporters that can’t tell sheep from goats. Look at the freaking link!!

Although I don’t really support the idea, some extra info might be needed. It’s not going to be a reality tv show about his life, but more like a documentary with experiments in a laboratory. He’ll always be supervised by a medical team (the network doesn’t really want him to die, you know) and he’s had several medical tests beforehand.
The network that’s broadcasting it has had several somewhat controversial programs (about sex) before, but this is definitely the most extreme things I’ve ever seen on Dutch television. Of course, that’s assuming I’m actually going to watch, and I probably will – at least once, because that’s how it goes with programs like these.
Also, no offense, I’d actually rather watch this than any C-list celebrity/survivor reality show or a lot of American shows (I lived in the States for nine months last year, so I’ve actually seen a lot of stuff I could’ve done without).
And finally, Dutch television, believe it or not, in general does still have somewhat of a high standard (although fading fast, I admit).
Oh, and don’t take the above the wrong way, I still like American pop culture. There’s a reason I’m addicted to…
