Download This: 'Elizabethtown' Soundtrack

16461__elizabethtown_lCameron Crowe loves Tom Petty and Elton John. The Say Anything… director just can’t seem to make it more than a few years without scoring a main character’s epiphany to one of the two musician’s songs. Tom Cruise howled along (badly) with Petty’s "Free Fallin" in Jerry Maguire. Sir Elton’s "Tiny Dancer" saw a huge resurgence after a warm and fuzzy singalong scene in Almost Famous. In Elizabethtown (which stars Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst, left, and opens Oct. 14), the featured track is John’s "My Father’s Gun."

The Elizabethtown soundtrack, now available for streaming on MySpace, brings together Ryan Adams, Patty Griffin and My Morning Jacket, who actually cameo in the film. There are also three songs by Petty, natch. It sounds great, but I’m a little suspicious. Are directors like Crowe and Zach "The Shins Will Change Your Life" Braff getting a cut of these artists’ royalties? Because if not, maybe they should be…
