Get acquainted with Ashlee's 'Boyfriend'

Categories: Music

16514__as_lPopWatch readers, I have a confession to make. Even though Ashlee Simpson fills me with nameless dread, when that darn ”Pieces of Me” comes on the radio, I don’t always change the station. Sometimes I even tap my feet. Once, I sang along with the chorus.

Okay, for the seven of you still reading this item, I have no such fondness for Ashlee’s new single, ”Boyfriend.” It’s playing over at AOL Music, and it, um, how do I put this politely? Well, let’s just say it’s almost as good as sister Jessica’s cover of ”These Boots Are Made for Walkin’.”

Give it a listen for yourself and weigh in. Will you take this ”Boyfriend” home, or kick it to the curb?

I think it’s kicky and catchy. Much better than “Shadow”.

take him home? he already lives with me. i find it to be quite an addictive song. And the video’s ok too.

    i think it’s a great, great song.

Honestly, Ashlee could put out the catchiest, most brilliant song ever and her career is still over. A re-run of her SNL “appearance” aired a couple days ago and it reminded me that she has no hope of succeeding in the music industry. The music industry has shifted to a period of artistic credibility right now, where the Britney’s and the Boy Bands are nowhere to be found and real music is rising to the top. Ashlee lost all credibility and her next album will likely do about as well as her latest movie did. Sorry, Ashlee, but the truth hurts. You might as well quit trying, because you’re wasting your time and everyone else’s.

I hate how musicians who don’t even write their own music are considered musicians. Ashlee Simpson is only famous because of her sister, thus she did not have to work at all for her fame. There is plenty of better music out there that deserves far more attention.

to be completely fair (and I do also think she is not high-enough caliber singer to be doing live shows and having any credibility as a musician) it’s actually her dad that made her first cd a success: it was his idea to do her reality show, and that show (along with her 7th heaven fan base) made that cd sell, i bought that cd because of the show, because you got to hear her songs on the show and the cd is actually really good, she can sing in the studio, it’s the live audience thing that just don’t work

I thought Ashlee did write some of her songs…the reality show had her collaborating. Am I wrong? I don’t have the cd to check.

i think that its an ok song, its not better than “shadow” but it is ok…her voice sounds weaker than usual. on “making the video” jessica dropped by just to show us that their family is all trash.

  • Tim

she did cowrite most of the songs. I thank Ashlee for her first album and not her dad.

Didn’t Hillary Duff just debut at number one? I don’t think artistic integrity is all that strong in the face of Us Weekly. Ashlee still walks the red carpet, still gets her picture taken, still shows up on Mtv. Regardless of her flat, nasal voice and structureless song, she’ll do just fine saleswise.

    I love it!
Who cares if she has talent!
98% of the musicians out there don’t!
That’s why SHAKE IT OFF (gross) is #1.
You can be a musician and not write songs. People are just jealous and bitter.
As long as society worships people like Paris Hilton – and the magazines SELL SELL SELL…this will be a world full of mediocrity!

I think it blows! Thank God there is still some REAL music out there. Sheesh. Ashleeeee is crapola!!!

I hate how people say that pop is not “real” music, just because pop artists don’t always write their own music. I don’t see what is wrong with a singer recording songs written by someone else. There are more song writers out there than can ever be artists. How is pop any less contrived than the indenti-kit rappers and rnb singers that dominate the charts today? Even a refreshingly good group like the Killers, or Greenday, seem to release the same songs over and over again.
Having said that, I do think Ashlee Simpson epitomizes everything that is wrong with today’s pop music. With her faux punk styling and flat, unemotional vocals that make Avril sound like Celine, it makes me wish I was back in 1997 when the Spice Girls and Hanson ruled the pop charts. At least they could sing live.

first of all, whoever said that music is shifting over to “artistic credibility” must be insane. HILARY DUFF, ok?
Ashlee wrote if not co-wrote all of the songs on her first album. I know. I bought it, and i listened to it, still listen to it and sing along with it. It’s a good album, if half of you had actually given it a chance you would see that. But people need to understand that it’s clearly not an album for everyone. If you’re over Ashlee’s age, you probably won’t like the CD as you are past what she’s currently singing about. While I say that, there are at least four universal songs.
“Boyfriend” is cute and itt works.

I am also guilty of loving “Pieces of Me”… but this new single is pure *S*H*l*T*E.

I’m not a fan of Ashlee (or Jessica – her vocal tics have gotten so annoying and exaggerated I can’t understand 40% of what she says in her songs), so I was expecting something horrible. But it wasn’t that bad.
It sounds like something Gwen Stefani could have pulled off much much better, but Ashlee’s voice isn’t that bad.
One question. Has she ever actually said she thinks of herself as punk? I thought she was a pop singer, and a couple of her previous songs were really good pop rock, but there’s nothing punk about them.

  • Chris Jones

Say what you want about Ashlee’s Dad, botched SNL appearance, etc, but you can’t deny the fact that she sings some dang catchy songs. I watched the video this morning and the song has been in my head all day! If the rest of her second album is as good as this song, Ashlee Simpson is going to be in the spotlight awhile longer—guess we are just going to have to get used to it.

  • ????

ASHLEE SIMPSON……UGLY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING???? YOU CANT SING THAT IS SOOOOO OBVIOUS EVEN ON YOUR CD, NO ONE HAS TO GO TO A CONCERT TO FIRGURE THAT OUT, YOUR NOT HOT, I THOUGHT YOU SAID YOU WERENT POP “YEAH RIGHT” AND BY THE WAY YOUR NEW VIDEO YOUR TRYING TO GO FOR THAT WHOLE SCHOOL GIRL THING NOT WORKING AT ALL, SORRY BUT YOUR NO BRITNEY.

  • Myself

I haven’t heard it, if I did didn’t recognize it or bother to take it in. I probably won’t even bother to type it in on Youtube. I’m not a big Ashlee fan –I don’t hat people, but “fake” doesn’t appeal to me, and seriously — is there anything still real on Ashlee? She’s had WAY too much plastic surgery for her age. Good job, Ash. Too bad she barely has any fans left. ON HER SINGING TALENT– I bought a ‘Mix’ CD with her song L.O.V.E on it, which I LOVE. When I went to check it out on Youtube, I realized how edited it was. Seriously. Her voice sucks. So right now, my thoughs about her are “whatever.” But she’d better love Pete & if she hurts him (or tries to make him a plastic surgery/nose surgery addict like her), she’ll have to deal with A LOT of people.
