I’m in the ”bargaining” phase of my Six Feet Under mourning period, which means I’ve decided that if I can’t have any more new episodes of HBO’s addictive funeral home series, then the entire cast must be dispersed to existing series immediately. Here’s where I’d put ‘em all:
-Frances Conroy (Ruth Fisher) as a steely police detective on Law & Order (tell me she wouldn’t be more interesting than Dennis Farina)
-Lauren Ambrose (Claire Fisher) as Rory’s slacker new boss on Gilmore Girls
-Peter Krause (Nate Fisher) as a vaguely unhinged love interest for Portia de Rossi on Arrested Development; after all, Krause says he’s aching to do something lighter.
-Rachel Griffiths (Brenda Chenowith) as a surly efficiency expert brought in to slash costs in the offices of Without a Trace
-Freddy Rodriguez (Federico Diaz) as an irritating middle manager on The Office
-Justina Machado (Vanessa Diaz) as Gabrielle’s scheming little sister on Desperate Housewives
-Michael C. Hall (David Fisher) as a cantankerous new neighbor of Reba’s
-Mathew St. Patrick (Keith Charles) as an investigator who butts heads with Horatio on CSI: Miami – that is if St. Patrick’s new series, Reunion, doesn’t catch on in the ratings
-James Cromwell (George Sibley) as a mysterious science teacher on Veronica Mars
And, yes, though I know she’s only a recurring player on Six Feet Under, I’d still send the delightful Joanna Cassidy (Margaret Chenowith) directly to The O.C. A good soap can’t have too many alpha bitches, and frankly, Brenda’s mom would leave that Julie Cooper tart shaking in her Manolos.
How would you distribute Six Feet’s MVPs in the primetime draft? Make like a network exec and post your wish list now.

I just listened to Alan Ball interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR’s ‘Fresh Air.’ He said it might not have been clear, but that Brenda was married twice after Nate’s death. He also pointed out that Claire was in her mid-40’s by the time she reconnected with Ted at her mother’s funeral. As for Nate and Maggie, he said that had Nate lived, he very well might have stayed with Brenda, despite having told her he wanted to leave her; Ball said that’s one of the tragedies of death, that you don’t know whether something someone said was just something he was feeling at the moment…But this does suggest that Ball didn’t mean to suggest Maggie was pregnant.
I LOVE REBA!!!
I haven’t seen the finale yet; as a poor writer, I can’t afford HBO. It’s Dickensian, I tell you.
This is an excellent exercise, and will have to give it some serious thought. I do think Lauren Ambrose should end up on Arrested Development, though.
Frances Conroy, as herself, playing Kevin Dillon’s new love interest on Entourage. They can go to the Jarmusch premiere together.
Thumbs down on Lauren Ambrose as Rory’s slacker boss. Ambrose would blow Alexis Bledel (the weakest link in the Gilmore Girls cast) off the screen.
Would rather see Peter Krause there because Gilmore Girls needs more testosterone and Krause needs a lighter role. Saw Krause and Lauren Graham co-presenting at the SAG Awards three years ago and damn they looked good together. Too bad Lorelai’s taken.
Would rather see Krause on David E. Kelley’s buzzed-about pilot set in the world of network morning TV. Remember Sports Night? Krause would make a great Matt Lauer to somebody else’s Katie Couric.
Media Grrl you are so right about Lauren Ambrose. Alexis Bledel, while cute, does not deserve to be on the same show as her. Put Lauren on Veronica Mars. Kristen Bell and she would do great together. Michael C. Hall could be the principal.
Alright, what about this. I think that Marc Cherry and Alan Ball should team up on Desperate Housewives. With Marc’s talent in the comedy field, and Alan’s indeniable nack for great drama, I think that the two could take the show to the next level. There can be room for Alan on DH, he can be mind of all of the mysteries and odd things that take place on Wisteria Lane and Marc can just concentrate on the lighter side of the show. Get it folks!! Alan (the dark side of DH) Marc (the lighter side).
Ive just hired lots of the series and have fallen deeply in lust for nate so i think he should come over to Ausrtalia.
Six Feet Under will be my forever favorite show! The most talented cast ever with the most extraordinary writing. Picture Frances Conroy on ABC’s Ugly Betty as the new head Diva of the show. She could play anything!
I never even watched TV that much !!!That is until I saw my first episode of six feet under. And every episode after that, well it was kind of like feeding a addiction. And to me 5 seasons of the Fishers just wasnt enough!!!!!!!
New homes for Six Feet Unders -
Frances Conroy as the cantankerous Nurse Hatched (ala Nurse Ratched in a new sitcom based on “…Cuckoo’s Nest” that follows the weekly exploits of patients in a mental care facility, where each week one of the other Six Feet Under Stars would make regular guest appearances, sometimes two at a time. Peter Krause would play a somewhat flamboyant homosexual and his alien, very unfamiliar with the English language boytoy who just came to US couple years ago would be played by Freddy Rodriguez, and they are there to visit Peter’s ailing homophobic father.
Rachel Griffiths would guest star in her native tongue and be a hospital administrator sent to evaluate Nurse Hatched’s abilities.
Michael C Hall would be a friend of one of the inmates, an macho scheming ex con with something devious up his sleeve. Lauren Ambrose might play his drug addicted pregnant with twins girlfriend.
How’s that?
I wasn’t thru…
Justina Machado could play a temporary hired to assist Nurse H, who is beyond dumb, dressed scantily and who spends all day flirting, even ending up having sex with someone, somewhat in public place.
Joanna Cassidy could be a 2 or 3 part recurring character sent to facility whom Nurse H has a lesbian attraction to which is somewhat returned and they flirt with going further.
Richard Jenkins could play another administrator who has it in for Nurse H and tries to kill her, unsucessfully.
James Cromwell and Ed Begley Junior could play brothers wying for the affection of the same inmate/patient, recurring on and off, togtether and separately, each trying to win the hand of patient (played by Patricia Clarkson is current scenes, and Kellie Waymire in flashbacks to previous decades…)
Matthew St. Patrick, husband of patient who together have 8 children he is raising alone, and is living with transgendered woman played by Lili Taylor.
On and on…
Also I definitely see Rachel Griffiths in an hour long drama, as a woman with 4 siblings centering around their relationship, with their mother being played by a legendary Oscar winning actress, bringing much clout the production, and it called be called something like Sisters & Brothers and of course there’s a gay sibling, a drug problem sibling, a Republican sibling, and an avg but lovable Joe sibling. Oh yes, they could have a dead father played by any one of the male actors who appeared in the Altman classic “Mash” And throw in a Thirtysomething regular for good measure….
Original huh?
it some serious thought. I do think Lauren Ambrose should end up on Arrested Development, though.
