Folks betting that the Emmys race for Best Actress in Comedy Series is a three-way battle among Desperate Housewives stars Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, or Marcia Cross (left) may be holding losing tickets — and the show’s creator Marc Cherry might be to blame, according to a provocative piece on GoldDerby.com today.
Emmy voters make their choices in the lead acting categories based on a single episode submitted by each nominated actor. GoldDerby’s Tom O’Neil reports that Cherry pressed his leading ladies to submit the best comedic performances, not necessarily their best overall performances, leading Huffman, for example, to submit the series’ pilot episode instead of ”Guilty,” which includes Lynette’s moving breakdown over her Ritalin addiction. ”Since actors are judging actors, they want to see — even in the comedy races — a nominee’s full chops, not just pratfalls. In all acting races, both comedy and drama, victorious submissions tend to include three things: range (tears to cheers), impact (a big emotional Money Scene) and sympathy (voters don’t like bitchy or bully characters),” writes O’Neil.
The Housewives‘ flubs could be good news for Everybody Loves Raymond’s Patricia Heaton, and Malcolm in the Middle’s Jane Kaczmarek; the latter’s submitted performance ”is so searing a viewing experience and Heaton’s entry is so touching and historic, being the last Ray, that both gals have a real shot at winning.” Interestingly, though, Huffman and Hatcher’s flubs could benefit Cross, argues O’Neil, because both of their submissions include strong scenes featuring their costar channeling the fascinatingly clenched Bree Van De Kamp.
I hope O’Neil is right; while all five nominees are worthy of recognition, Cross provided so many riveting moments this season — the dripping burrito, the hospital-room evisceration of Rex, Bree’s brutally awkward dinner party — that denying her an Emmy would be borderline criminal.
Which nominee do you think deserves the Emmy? Is there any way that Golden Globe winner Hatcher can lose? And do you have any plans to buy the Desperate Housewives soundtrack when it hits shelves this fall?

As much as I believe Marcia Gross deserves to win, I have a feeling she’ll be snubbed for someone more bland…like Teri Hatcher. Let’s hope the Emmy voters get it right for once, but, I’m not holding my breath.
I think Marc Cherry is right, and if he is not, then he SHOULD be. It’s the comedy category; they should be judged on their comedic performance, not dramatic performance. But either way I think Marcia Cross deserves it. Teri Hatcher’s “has-been” routine is no longer cute.
And haha Scott, did you call her Marcia Gross on purpose?
Marcia Cross, hands down, is one of the best actresses on television. Teri Hatcher *totally* STOLE Marcia’s much-deserved Golden Globe and I’m terribly afraid that she’s going to steal Marcia’s much-deserved Emmy, too. Teri is a fantastic actress, but she isn’t matching up to Marcia anytime soon. She’s terrifying, she’s sympathetic, she’s desperate, she’s hillarious-Marcia has got all of Bree’s emotions down and portrays them quite brilliantly each and every episode of “Desperate Housewives”. Sure, she may be brilliant in dramatic scenes, but she can also steal the comedic scenes with her perfect delivery. If Anyone Deserves The Emmy, It’s Marcia…and I totally agree with Tom on this one.
For Emmy voters to have gotten anything right this year, they would have to have ignored this over-hyped, over-rated, boring-ass show along with the series that tied it for most nominations: Will & Grace which, honestly, stopped being funny two years ago. If there is any justice in the world (which there probably isn’t) either Scrubs or Arrested Development will take home the prize for Best Comedy come Emmy night. Both shows consistantly make me laugh out loud and keep me interested in the lived of their characters.
Uh, is it too late to vote for Lauren Graham? Or Sarah Chalke? Seriously, that is one unimpressive list of nominees. It’s all just a bunch of hamming and yelling.
Patricia Heaton was the backbone of “Everybody Loves Raymond.” She was never the one that got the big laughs, but she helped lend to the humanity of the show. Her “Debra” was the most realistic character on the show, and she deserves her prize.
To Stef, no poor typing on my part. That’s what I get for trying to type at 8:30 in the morning.
My vote is for Marcia Cross, though I’m still gutted Eva didn’t even get nominated. She doesn’t surpass Marcia, but Eva had funnier, more memorable lines and her charactor grew more over the season than Teri’s.
Marcia Cross was absolutely brilliant throughout the first season of Desperate Housewives. She consumed her character and she deserves the Emmy without a doubt. She could be heart-breakingly dramatic or she could deliver one liners like nobody’s business. If you want to see what REAL actors can do with a character, watch Marcia. She turned Bree into a deep, multi-dimensional character to be reckoned with.
I must say that Patricia Heaton has an incredibly good shot at winning too, given the episode that she submitted. The final episode of Ray showed Patricia at her absolute best. The moment Deborah found out Ray might die, her reaction to the news broke my heart and gave me chills. That short, potent piece of acting brilliance could be enough to win Patricia another Emmy. I certainly would be deserved.
I would have had the nominees like this:
Marcia Cross, “DH”-The Obvious Winner
Felicity Huffman, “DH”
Lauren Graham, “Gilmore Girls”
Patricia Heaton, “Everybody Loves Raymond”
Debra Messing”, “Will And Grace”
^Debbie is the only bright spot left in the whole show.
Jane from Malcolm in the Middle deserves the Emmy far more than the other four nominees. She has been nominated 6 times, with 6 discouraging loses. All the actress from Desperate Housewives have many more years of Emmy nominations ahead of them, and Patricia Heaton already has two!
Jane has delivered such wonderful performances every season, and this is her year
Can’t find anyone who deserves more the Emmy this season than Marcia Cross! What she did with the character of Bree Van de Kamp was really impressive. She deserves the award based on the whole season and based on the submissions. I hope the Emmys get right what the Golden Globe and the SAG Awards got wrong and award the best actress on tv last season!
I totally agree with Stef: “Teri Hatcher’s ‘has-been’ routine is no longer cute.”
I don’t know, it seems kind of like poetic justice for submitting a soap opera in the comedy catagory because the competition is “easier”. If it isn’t a very good comedy, then they shouldn’t win in that catagory, regardless of how good the performances are otherwise.
I don’t think DH should win best comedy, simply because even though it’s a good show, it’s not the best comedy on TV. But if the acting is good, I don’t see why one of the actresses from the show can’t win.
I really want Felicity Huffman to win. I feel that she was robbed at the Golden Globes. In my opinion Teri Hatcher is not in the same league as Felicity and Marcia Cross. I do agree that Mark Cherry lead the women in the wrong direction by having them submit more comedic episodes. When Cynthia Nixon won for Sex in the City wasn’t her episode more dramatic then comedic?
Eva Longoria to be nominated! Marcia Cross to win!
MARCIA CROSS! No offense to Teri and Felicity and the other nominees but MArcia cross is really the best actress so far. She played her character well. She could be dramatic and she could be really funny with her one-liners. She turned BRee into a phenomenal charcater. So here’s hope to MArcia winning the emmy. HANDS DOWN TO MARCIA CROSS!!!
Teri Hatcher should win. Why ? Because she just should. If she didn’t deserve the golden globe or the screen actors guild awards, do you think she would’ve got them ? Lmao hehe… Nah, they are all great actresses but Teri should take the cup… Ciao
Marcia Cross should definitely win. Terri is so overrated. Her personality on DH just gets annoying at times. Terri isnt as good compared to Marcia with the role of Bree.
omg marcia cross should soooooooo win shes the only reason people watch the show so why would anyone else deserve it more?!?! teri hatcher is annoying and desperately overated!!!
I love marcia cross. if any one should win a prize it should be her, teri hatcher is over rated i cant stand her character. if marcia didnt win even though she sould then i would think patricia heaton than Felicity Huffman.I love marcia cross!!
