Good news and bad news.
The good news: Dick Clark’s publicist says he will be well enough to do his New Year’s Rockin’ Eve show this December; it’ll mark Clark’s first public appearance in more than a year, since the stroke that sidelined him from the last Times Square celebration.
The bad news: He’s sharing ball-drop duties with Ryan Seacrest (left).
I don’t mean bad news for TV viewers (though anyone who feels that they’re not getting enough Seacrest since the American Idol host’s afternoon chat show’s untimely demise should say so below… Anyone? Bueller?). Rather, it’s bad news for Carson Daly. All those years he’s spent grooming himself to be Gen Y’s version of Dick Clark, only to be usurped as heir apparent by Seacrest.
No doubt Daly is drafting a cautionary letter right now to the man who spurned him, telling Clark to watch his back. Sure, Seacrest looks innocuous, but his career is thriving, while Brian Dunkleman and Casey Kasem linger in showbiz purgatory. You’ve been warned, Dick.

Yeah, there’s a reason Seacrest’s show was canceled. Let’s just say he’s not the main draw on American Idol.
Ryan Seacrest is terribly overexposed and his unkempt hair, unshaven look and I-haven’t-slept-for-hours smile has somehow made him a “star”, with an undeserved star on the Walk of Fame to boot! Also, the picking-on-Simon schtick on “American Idol” is beyond old hat and considering that America knows Simon is the voice of reason, it might be wise for him to stop treating all the contestants as if they’re the second coming. His gutless love for everyone, even people like Jim Verraros and Scotty “The Body”, wins him no fans.
I don’t really watch AI but most people seem to hate this guy. Well, you guys should check out Kathy Griffin’s stand-up act on Bravo. They’ve run it a couple of times already she does this great bit on Ryan Seacrest. Really funny.
I guess since Ryan doesn’t get arrested for drug use or throwing phones at people he’s just not cool enough for you people. Maybe he’d be the new “It Guy” if he followed in the moral footsteps of Brad Pitt or Jude Law, but it seems that Ryan is just a regular guy that believes that hard work pays off. Not everyone has to be nasty to people in order to be successful.
I had rather see Ryan than Carson. I also enjoyed watching Ryan’s afternoon show. He is just a good ole southern boy doing good. You go Ryan !
Well – I guess I’ve watched my last New Years Rockin Eve. So long Dick!
I heard this today, and to me, it’s a sign of the Apocalypse. I guess Dick Clark was the Seacrest of his day, and I’ve never felt quite the same about him since “Bowling for Columbine”, but still, he’s an institution. I grew up with him. Say it: Ryan Seacrest’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, and then weep.
I think Ryan is way better then Carson. In fact I think Ryan should be the only one to do the New Years Rockin Eve.It’s time for Dick Clark to just let go of the show
