-EW TV critic Gillian Flynn rightly deplores the use of Malvina Reynolds ”Little Boxes” as the theme for Showtime’s Weeds; if you’re going to spoof suburban conformity, don’t be so conformist as to use the same folk song used by every other suburban satirist. Still, Flynn adds, you should stick around past the opening credits to watch this creative dramedy about a widowed suburban mom (Mary-Louise Parker) who sells pot to maintain her lifestyle. The premiere is Sunday at 11.
-Go see Broken Flowers. Besides an already Oscar-touted Bill Murray performance, it features a soundtrack that relies heavily on Ethiopian hard-bop jazz composer Mulatu Astatke.
-Watch MTV 2 throughout the weekend for their show on the making of All-American Rejects’ fascinating ”Dirty Little Secret” video. As EW reported last week, the video is based on a larger online art project that invites users to submit their own darkest secrets anonymously.
-Watch Mo’Nique’s Fat Chance, a makeover-free beauty contest for plus-sized women hosted by the sassy comedienne (above), Saturday and Sunday at 8 pm on Oxygen. No real music connection here, except that the judges are sometime rapper Shaquille O’Neal and Aerospawn Mia Tyler.
