He’s written the lyrics; you supply the chords and melody. Contest details are in this Associated Press article and in the upcoming issue of Esquire, where the singer/songwriter has a monthly column. If you win, you get an autographed guitar and bragging rights, while Mayer gets royalties in perpetuity and the adulation of throngs of fans. Sucka.

That makes me want to run through the halls of my high school and scream at the top of my lungs…
Mayer’s buddy Dave Chappelle isn’t too busy these days, maybe he could pen a few songs for Mayer’s next album?
John Mayer needs to broaden his horizons. He’s getting into his late 20′s and can start concerning himself less with overromanticized sexual fantasies with the likes of Jennifer Love Hewitt and start penning songs about things that are actually happing in this world. If you ask me, he should cut that mangy mop, and take 3 minutes out of his life to sing a song about one topic other than gooey puppy love.
Did anyone else think that the lyrics to that song were “I want to run fully armed through my high school…”? No? Okay, never mind.
Daisyj, before you begin to criticize John Mayer’s writing, how about you do yourself a favor and learn how to spell.”and start penning songs about things that are actually -happing- in this world.” And Phil, that one line you are referring to did more for him than you will ever accomplish in your life…..yea 1 line is all that took. And Daisyj, what does his hair have to do with anything? I mean seriously, the dude is a rock star, long hair comes with that job. The bottom line is, he is giving someone a chance to be heard and get a free guitar, why should that be criticized? The Mans just doing musicians a favor. Even if the musician doesn’t get royalties that shouldn’t bother him/her, because any real musician would care more about having his/her music commended and getting a free guitar then his/her name on one little line on a cd. He’s giving people an opportunity, which is better than what you’re doing, giving a couple hundred people your opinion on a web site. I suggest you stop complaining and try to write a song.

With a name like Phil McCrevis, your not running through high schools, your probably running through corn fields…. backwards!
John Mayer offered a contest to see who is capable of writing melody and chords that closely follows his original intentions. It is called, “mentoring with a carrot.” One does not have to guess or possess physic abilities. Good musicianship, and applied syncopation matched to the syllable-phrases, is part of the puzzle of building a great song. Tim Fagan won the contest. “His lead guitar and vocals hit home.” “He is a winner!” Tim’s melody and chords, combined with John’s flavorful words was a marriage in hit-song-heaven. “The hook, the bridge and the return are branded. This song is going round-and-round in a pleasant loop.” I pray that Tim Fagan receive offers for a mutually beneficial record contract. He has paid his dues in Los Angeles. He played over 80 show last year and is building a noticeably loyal fan base. John. When you speak with God, please ask him what you can do to assist.
Respectfully,
