Get yer motors runnin': EW picks the 10 best movie cars

145249__blues_lSomewhere in Hollywood, Herbie the Love Bug is on the phone, threatening to fire his publicist, while the bus from Speed is about to give an exclusive to Access Hollywood,  revealing the secret that she’s just a very big car. And Christine? Well, that old wreck has whipped herself into another homicidal rage. Why all the hullabaloo? In Entertainment Weekly’s Aug. 12 issue –- which features The Dukes of Hazzard‘s General Lee on the cover — Chris Nashawaty names the 10 best cars in movie history, and none of the aforementioned vehicles made the cut. Herewith, those that did (in no particular order):

1. The Corvette with fangs from Death Race 2000 (1975)
2. The Trans Am from Smokey and the Bandit (1977)
3. The ’56 T-Bird in American Graffiti (1973)
4. The Lotus Esprit in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
5. The ”family truckster” station wagon from National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983)
6. The Blues Mobile from The Blues Brothers (1980, left)
7. The time-travelin’ DeLorean from Back to the Future (1985)
8. The Mustang GT from Bullitt (1968)
9. The Pussy Wagon from Kill Bill — Vol 1. (2003)
10. The titular star of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)

What do you think of EW’s picks? Any glaring omissions or inclusions? Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines…

hello, where is James Bond’s car from Goldfinger, all spy cars after that would based on it. It has to be in the top five.

I don’t know if it’s mentioned in the article, but what about the evil semi-truck from Maximum Overdrive?
That big scary green head gave me nightmares for weeks… or was it Emilio Estevez? Probably a combination of the two.

    Here’s my list:
The Aston Martin from “Goldfinger”: It had GPS & a cel phone in 1964, machine guns, and an ejector seat.
    The Batmobile
The Delorian from “Back to the Future”
The General Lee: our moms yelled at us for trying to enter the car through the windows because of this one.
    The flying cars from Bladerunner
    Optimus Prime
Christie Brinkley’s Ferrari in “National Lampoons vacation” (we all wanted a ride that day).

The Ferrari from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, your choice of any vehicle from Dazed and Confused, the shaggin-wagon from Dumb and Dumber, and the Merfmobile from Wayne’s World would have been awesome additions, but good call on the Delorian and the family truckster.

My favorite…maybe it doesn’t fit into this “car”tegory, however… Pee Wee Herman’s awesome bike in Pee Wee’s Great Adventure!!!
    Also…Fred Sanford’s 53 Pick-up truck.

  • Tiffany

Ok, The Blues Mobile from The Blues Brothers needs to be higher than 6. And where is The Batmobile?

  • Mike Mixer

Doesn’t anybody remember the first true terror on the highway movie? The list has to have Dennis Weavers dodge
from Duel,or the charger from Dirty Mary Crazy Larry. And
let us not forget the motorcycle Steve McQueen rode in the Great Escape(I still root for him to jump the fence)

What about the 1934 ford from the movie “The California Kid” great car
