This Sunday marks the 11th consecutive week without a new episode of Desperate Housewives, and addicts of ABC’s darkly comic soap opera (such as myself) are reaching pale, baggy-eyed, and twitchy new lows. But like I always say when I run out of Sauvignon Blanc, ”Pass the Cabernet!”
In that spirit, try scheduling a ”Desperate Substitutes” night for the next seven Sundays; you may be having trouble living without the residents of Wisteria Lane, but obsessing over the past works of the actors who play ‘em may be just the fix you need. Here’s a few possibilities:
-Catch plumber Mike (James Denton) in a small supporting role in John Woo’s too-cool thriller Face/Off…
-…while his on-again, off-again love, Susan (Teri Hatcher), holds her own in the terrific ensemble comedy Soapdish.
-Guffaw heartily as ghostly Mary Alice (Brenda Strong) haunts Elaine as the brassy, brassiere-flaunting Sue Ellen Mischke, a recurring character on Seinfeld…
-…then wonder why Felicity Huffman (left, with Joshua Malina) just got her first Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy after viewing her sensational work as lovelorn sports producer Dana Whitaker in the short-lived cult favorite Sports Night, now on DVD.
-If you’re like me, you’ve seen A Face To Kill For like a half-dozen times on cable, but try to Tivo it anyway, to see the sinister side of Lynette’s husband Tom (Doug Savant), in this loopy thriller about a horse trainer who’s wrongly sent to prison.
-On the other hand, I’ve never seen Bree (Marcia Cross) in 1996′s Female Perversions, but the dubious title alone seems to promise some kind of camp classic, no?
-And while her neighbor Edie (Nicollette Sheridan) has filmed her share of straight-to-DVD releases, the Leslie Nielsen spoof Spy Hard was not one of ‘em.
