News that Julia Roberts will be appearing on Broadway next spring in a little-known drama, Three Days of Rain, by Richard Greenberg (Take Me Out), prompts an obvious question: Why now? Here are some possible reasons:
-Broadway does so few straight dramas these days, so it took Roberts a while to find a stage opportunity that didn’t require her to sing.
-Her role is part of the Tony committee’s new plan to get people to watch their awards show.
-The run’s only 12 weeks, not too long to cut into her $20 million-a-picture movie career.
-Now that she’s a mom, she’s looking for mom roles, which Hollywood isn’t quite ready to give her.
-The theater is near the world’s largest Toys R Us store.
-It’s hard to get good bagels when you live in New Mexico.

Just last night I attended the concluding performance of “Steel Magnolias” on Broadway, wherein Shelby, the part played by Julia Roberts in the movie, was played by Rebecca Gayheart. (Dylan McKay could not be reached for comment.) She was okay, but her diabetic fit held nary a candle to Mrs. Moder’s.
Do you really think Julia’s “looking” for mom roles? Give her a few years and those are the only roles she’ll be offered.
How do you know she’s looking for “mom roles”? Julia has no hard time find rolls. In fact, she doesn’t find them, they finf her. Maybe she wants something more subdued, now that she is a mother.
There’s nothing wrong with Broadway.
Um… well, I’ll jump out there and state the obvious. Maybe it’s a good script. And when you’ve got twins to take care of, the script had better be damned good. Maybe she wants the immediate gratification of live performance. Also, once she’s through the rehearsal process, she can work while the twins are sleeping and get some well-deserved adult time. Sounds like a win-win situation to me.
