Could Kate Hudson’s nice-girl persona be just a big act? Helen Pidd, a writer for British newspaper The Guardian, seems to suggest exactly that in an unflattering profile published yesterday. Check out this doozy of an excerpt:
When [Hudson] doesn’t want to answer a question she tuts, ”That is so not important,” following it up with a dazzling smile. It’s like being one of the dweebs in Mean Girls. She has a knack of making you feel a bit dense, or that you are asking a stupid question, and it’s only afterwards that you realise your inquiry was reasonable.
Pidd also criticizes The Skeleton Key star’s tendency to start questions with the phrase ”I’m the kind of person who …” and finish with such self-flattering remarks as ”just wants to make people happy/wants to experience everything and learn everything I possibly can/has always been interested in so many things.” Ouch! C’mon now, Helen, how do you really feel?
On the other hand, though, you might make the case that it’s Pidd who’s got the attitude problem. Her description of Hudson’s physical appearance is particularly brutal:
Hudson is currently very thin, almost scrawny in the flesh. Though she is looking stunning in a red draped dress and delicate brown sandals, her bones protrude awkwardly at the shoulders and her head seems slightly too big for her body.
Whew, I’m glad she’s not around to see my new haircut! No matter whose side you’re on, the article is must-read material. Who’s the villain and who’s the victim? Weigh in now!

Of course that reporter got some talk-back. She’s an unimaginative twit who keeps asking the same stupid questions.
I am not surprised at all. My best friend’s cousins went to school with Hudson. They always said that she was incredibly stuck-up and obnoxious (definitely a “Mean Girl”). Oddly enough, they said that her brother, Oliver, was the exact opposite. Guess having a celebrity mom affects people differently. That said: I am still a fan of her as an actress. She was great in “Almost Famous” and has the potential to become an even better actress. Too bad that she’s a – well, you know what I mean.
Best Friend’s Cousins? Well that’s certainly first hand experience. Maybe we could hear from someone who actually knows her? For that matter, why do we care? She’s an actress. She does her job, and does it well. What difference does it make, what kind of person she is off screen? We aren’t paying to watch her live her life, we’re paying to watch her act.
Having just had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Hudson during her press junket in New Orleans I can only say one thing to Mrs. ‘I am-a-serious-journalist’ Pidd: Go back to eating your Fish & Chips and GET REAL!
Oh wow, another dull, uninspiring, self-centered actress….what a surprise.
The question is who cares? She’s obviously as fake a person as she is an actress.
Just a guess, but I believe the interviewer was just being honest and giving her true impressions as opposed to trying to make the interviewee look good no matter what. I wish more reporters were so honest.
I happened to have been on the crew of The Skeleton Key, and worked with kate every day for quite a while.
Not once did she snub or otherwise treat anyone as if she were better than them.
What you people who aren’t in the business don’t know is that acting can be grueling, stressful, work. Add the public, family/friends, the media, etc,. It is not as glamourous as you think. Actors barely have time for their own family, screw anyone else demanding all smiles from you.
martha
totally agree hudson is nasty. also, dumb as a doorpost. possibly due to all the “herbs” she ingests.
just a british bitch interviewing an american bitch.
Perhaps we don’t have much to do in our personal lives if we are paying so much attention to these things. We have a right to an opinion, but what people fail to notice is that perhaps, we criticize too much. Sure, it’s possible the interviewer or the actress might actually be rude, fake, or to some people’s surprise, be a genuinely nice person; however, if we do not know them personally, perhaps we shouldn’t pass such a quick judgement on them, or anybody for that matter.
love it… Kate might be a capital B but the reporter is the one at fault for even printing such trashy catty stuff…
Kate is one of the sweetest, cutest and nicest stars in hollywood.. why pick on her? how about paris hilton? lisay? that reporter got too personal on her opinion and being very rude.. that’s not how journalist should be.. we don’t want your opinion.. we’ll judge it for ourself.. keep your opinion to yourself.
Here’s the thing – who cares? Have we all so little to do in our small mundane boring little lives that we need to scrutinize the opinion one person has of another just because they both are in the public spotlight? Even if Kate Hudson is nasty or Helen Pidd was just having a bad day… I mean, really, how does this affect our lives in the least?
I have actually seen her on a late night show and she seemed very thick. She could not even string sentences together to answer questions. It was the oddest thing ever. The fact that she’s a b*tch matters very little considering that it’s totally what I expected…I am sure she has to deal with so much being in the spotlight, wah wah wah…woe is me, I am so super famous. I don’t think we should pick on Paris, she is what she is and does NOT hide it. That is probably the reason that I love her…she is honest with the public–does not hide behind the “I am so totally nice, love me, little people!” shield. As to the person who made the “mundane little lives” comment, why are you even posting if it’s a waste of your time??
i could care less about KH or most celebrities, but I think going through press junket-hell and these ridiculous movie promotional tours factors into this kind of behavior. None of us “mere mortals” can appreciate that sort of grind and what it’s like to be bombarded with the SAME QUESTIONS over and over and over by dim-witted entertainment journalists – especially when the primary topic is some god-awful looking movie like this one. I get snippy with people at work that ask me dumb questions before my second cup of coffee….
