At last, our long national nightmare is over. Bowing to complaints, ABC plans to make the voting on the next edition of Dancing with the Stars more like American Idol. When the show returns in January, it’ll air twice a week, adding a results show so that audiences and judges are voting on the same week’s performances. Also, there may be more than six couples, so the series will last longer. (Let’s see if, at two nights a week, ABC has the chutzpah to overlap at all with Fox’s two nights a week of Idol.)
Meanwhile, Dancing winner Kelly Monaco is telling John O’Hurley fans to suck it up. Following up ABC entertainment chief Stephen McPherson’s suggestion that she and runner-up O’Hurley have a rematch, she told a reporter at the TV Critics’ conclave, ”You want a dance-off, come on up here — I’ll give you a dance-off!” She scoffed at those who’ve grumbled that her status as an ABC soap star had anything to do with her victory. ”I guess Trista wasn’t part of ABC, huh? Oh, she was?” She also dismissed the idea that General Hospital’s fanbase had anything to do with her win. ”John O’Hurley was part of a phenomenon: Seinfeld — 20 million viewers a week, still on the air in syndication! I’m on a soap that holds 2.5 million. You do the math!” For a championship dancer, Monaco’s certainly not afraid to step on anyone else’s toes.

This difference is Trista is NO LONGER on ABC. They have no vested interest in having her win because she is not on a current show. Kelly Monoco is a sore winner. Obviously it was rigged.
I don’t think it was rigged! I jumped up and down when they announced Kelly as the winner! I think she was fantastic in the finale and all the mugging from John O’Hurley was annoying. She deserved to win!
Don’t be surprised if next time they don’t allow their soap stars to appear on that show. That will definitely show how rigged that outcome was.
Kelly Monaco kicked butt on that show. Me and about 26 other girls & guys from work all watched the show, & all voted for her every week. I thought the judges treated her like crap until the last episode… when they busted out with those 10’s. Now I agree, it wasn’t a 10 performance, due to the ending. But it was a 9. I think the judges were just trying to save face at that point because they knew she was going to win.
O’Hurley was fun to watch, but he really wasn’t as on his game the last 3 episodes. Charlotte was a fantastic dancer~ but that doesn’t mean John was.
Rachel Hunter was AWFUL. I can’t believe anyone thought that gangly woman could dance! Holyfield was bad, but at least he tried. The New Kids on the Block guy was ok
but I didnt think his partner was that great actually.
As for Trista- she didn’t dance horribly at all. I’m not a fan of hers, but I think she got voted off because the fans were sick of seeing her everywhere on ABC.
Kelly won fair and square because of the VOTING- not because of ABC tactics. I think O’Hurley is a sore loser because he is pushing this “conspiracy” idea along.
I don’t think John O’Hurley has said much about his loss. Kelly is the one that keeps flapping her mouth about it. You won, woman, move on!
What a stupid flap about a talented young woman with moxy … She merely responded toward the latter part of this (does it rate being called “controversy”) to being hounded by the poor sportmanship of the “o’hurl” supporters … I don’t blame her for finally giving back a bit of the same after so much sour grape reaction to her winning efforts from “poor loser” proponents.
Ms. Monoco worked far harder than John O. did, and, for crying out loud, he still won respect until his fans, or whatever they were, started trying to diminish Ms Monoco’s win. Granted, it was also a popularity contest and a recognition of the most improved.
(I’d like to see HIM cover the floor and the movements that she covered in that competition. He couldn’t do it. The woman in such couple competitions has always had a more demanding part in such performances.)
It’s sad that those who are so jealous of the tiny beauty that they have to tear at her triumph. I’m a big woman, not a beauty, so my instinct has been more often critical of those who are petite AND beautiful, but I was happy for her. Honestly, she did deserve to win – she earned it, coming from far behind the others in spite of an incredible amount of criticism. She won by sheer effort and determination – not to mention natural talent.
Kudos, Kelly! I, for one, am proud of you!
I can not believe that ABC stooped low enough to have a dance off. Kelly won, and O’Hurly lost. Plain and simple. Is he that much of a sore loser? There is no way he could have even come close to doing the dance moves that Kelly did. What’s next? Nascar or the NFL having to do a race over, or a game again, just because of poor sportmanship? Kelly should continue to be proud of herself. And…she IS on a current show. 5 days a week. What is John doing? What a travesty!
I just wish they had advertised the ‘dance-off’ more. I loved Charlotte and John and really enjoyed watching them.. I would have loved the opportunity to vote but alas, I found out too late – except I did see it (rerun).
The whole thing is a great idea — just figure out a cool way to have Charlotte and John on each season.
The charity angle is excellent!
– great show!
