Who knew Third Rock From the Sun would turn out to be such a stepping stone? Series star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who played young alien Tommy Solomon on the long-running NBC sitcom and then took some time away from show-biz to attend Columbia University, is suddenly a hot Hollywood property.
His latest release, Mysterious Skin, has earned him excellent reviews, and now Variety reports he’s been cast in his first lead role in a big studio production, playing a disabled janitor who gets caught up with bank robbers in The Lookout.
Was there any way to predict Gordon-Levitt’s impending ‘it’-dom? Check out his work in season one of Third Rock, which arrives on DVD today, and make the call for yourself.

Of course Joseph Gordon-Levitt was destined for stardom! Anyone who watched Third Rock knew it. He was always hillarious as “Tommy”, the old alien in a teenager’s body. He’s just stretching and showing his versaltility now that he is doing drama. Smart move on two parts for him to go to Columbia. He gets an education to fall back on and distances himself enough from his comedic roots for folks to see him doing drama. Bravo!
Heads up to the author- this isn’t Joseph’s first studio film lead. He had the male lead in the teen flisk “10 Things I hate About You” That minor detail aside, Bravo for Joseph! He’s uber-talented and deserves all the shots at fame he can get.
The more praise that can be directed his way, the better. While the writing and directing in “Mysterious Skin” was uncommonly good, it was Gordon-Levitt’s acting that really pulled it all together. Was truly one of the best performances I’ve seen so far this year.
Actually, Levitt wasn’t the male lead in “10 Things I Hate About You.” That was Heath Ledger.
Unfortunately haven’t seen this movie just yet, just realised after surfing through multiple site reviews and reader comments that many people are mistaking Joseph for Heath Ledger.
Heath Ledger was the lead in “10 Things I Hate About You”; NOT Joseph gordon Levitt. Sure they have similarities in facial appearance, but that’s that.
I didn’t like “3rd Rock..”; typical American TV show humour; ie, low in IQ, high in tacky Americanisms. Wasn’t humourous to me at all, I stopped watching TV to avoid being exposed to brainless crap that degraded my thinking processes.
I just think Joseph Gordon-Levitt is nice lookin!
Heath Ledger and Joseph were BOTH in “10 Things” along with a powerful cast including Julia Stiles and David Krumholtz (newly studly in Numb3rs). Joe did drama way before tv comedy! His very first role at age 6 was as Tommy Lee Jones’ son in a tv movie. Other youthful lead dramatic roles included: a kid who needed to divorce his parents, and a kid who rescued a baby elephant from poachers in Kenya. And you MUST check out “Manic,” done right after 3rd Rock ended, in which Joe played an emotionally disturbed guy institutionalized for almost killing another kid with a baseball bat. Starred along with Don Cheadle and Zooey Deschanel. You can see the entire resume at http://www.IMDb.com
