Okay, we already knew from the Ring movies that Naomi Watts (left) could scream, but day-um! The first King Kong trailer, which debuted Monday night on NBC’s broadcast networks and now lives on Volkswagen’s website, has us pounding our chests already. The highlights:
1. Ann Darrow (Watts) screams for the camera; in the distance, we hear for the first time an unseen Kong returning the favor with a monkey love call. Chills.
2. The views of 1930s Manhattan are impressive for a set created on a New Zealand soundstage (or in some F/X artist’s computer).
3. Jack Black seems surprisingly credible playing it straight.
4. Kong snatches Ann from a dinosaur’s jaws — nice move.
5. That final image, where we finally get a good look at the great ape’s face, with its lopsided, orthodontically challenged scowl, one lonely fang jutting up from the corner of his clenched jaw. How can you not love a mug like that?
I’m ready to line up for popcorn now. Instead, now we have to wait until December 14. In the meantime, check out a gallery of movie stills on the newly launched King Kong website and additional behind-the-scenes photos and set-design concept art at VW’s site.
So, what did you think?

It looks really good! I guess Peter Jackson will never have a failed movie attempt!
looks super good! can’t wait to see it. love any movie with big scary animals…a la anaconda.
I was kinda disapointed by it, looked too much CGI, I dunno if there needs to be more retouching but Jurassic Park had better looking Trexs, lol. Still I will go see it the first day

Seeing KING KONG this December will bring back good childhood memories of (believe it or not) the 1976 version. I was 9 years-old when I saw it and absolutely loved it. Still do. Until then, I had only seen Disney and the wilderness films that were very popular in the ’70’s. KONG ‘76 introduced me to the movies on a grand, epic, eventful scale, and for me, movies would never be the same.
No doubt, Peter Jackson will give the legendary story its proper justice with today CGI technology.
But when, oh when, is the original 1933 KING KONG going to be released on DVD???
A tad much CGI, and come on, why show us the T rex? can you imagine how amazingly awesome THAT surprise WOULD have been in the theater? Otherwise, i’m hooked. Kudos, Mr. jackson. looks amazing.
Jurrasic Park meets King Kong…ho hum…I was hoping for more..the actors look great, but I was disappointed with the idea of dinosaurs and giant gorillas living together…next you’ll be telling me cats and dogs are living in the streets…
Amazing! I wasnt really looking foward to this until I saw this preview, i got goosebumps and that has NEVER happened to me…..I can’t wait to see this!
wow….Im speechless Cant wait to see this on the big screen
