No more waiting tables for Virginia Madsen. After her Oscar-nominated role as forlorn waitress Maya in Sideways, she’s landed three jobs. She recently shot the thriller Firewall with Harrison Ford, and she signed on last week to star in another thriller, a docudrama set in Kenya called In the Shadow of Wings. Now, she’s joining the cast of Robert Altman’s big-screen version of A Prairie Home Companion, playing a femme fatale. Set backstage at Garrison Keillor’s radio show, the film features the typically eclectic Altman collection of all-stars not usually found in the same universe: Keillor, Madsen, Meryl Streep, Woody Harrelson, Lily Tomlin, Maya Rudolph, Kevin Kline, John C. Reilly, and Lindsay Lohan. (Hey, she can’t do Disney remakes forever.)
Justin Timberlake‘s girlfriend is a fr-reak! No, not Cameron Diaz, Christina Ricci, his on-screen love interest in Black Snake Moan. Mentoring the troubled couple will be bluesman Samuel L. Jackson. OK, this sounds like a weird hybrid of Ralph Macchio’s Crossroads and Woody Allen’s Anything Else, where Ricci also played a sex addict with a beleaguered young boyfriend (Jason Biggs) who sought counsel from an older crank (Allen). Still, the bluesman-as-Dr.-Ruth idea could be interesting. Title, by the way, comes from an old Blind Lemon Jefferson tune, and it means pretty much what you think it means.
Oprah Winfrey is championing a young man who doesn’t have to jump up and down on her furniture to draw attention. She’s the narrator of the documentary Emmanuel’s Gift, about a one-legged man from Ghana who changed his country’s perception of the disabled by making a 360-mile trip from one end of Ghana to the other on a bicycle. Wow — I have two legs, and I get winded after 20 minutes on the stationary bike.
